Did driver's licences really used to list marital status?

I’ve been watching season of The Lucy Show on DVD. One episode revolved around Lucy’s attempt to woo her son’s new teacher. She & Viv concocted a zany scheme to get ahold of his wallet so she can check his driver’s licence to check to see if he’s marred. Did driver’s licences really list marital status back then (1962)? I know they were just paper certificates with a description (not a photo) of the driver, but why would marital status be listed? Did they list the spouse’s name too, or was it just considered general indentifying information?

Did you google it? I got at least the start of some info by googling: driver license marital status

Here’s a picture of a 1950 Texas driver’s license. As you can see, marital status isn’t listed. Just sex, date of birth, height, weight, race, hair and eye color, and name and address.

Here’s Shoeless Joe Jackson’s South Carolina license from 1949. Also no marital status.

However, here’s a California license from 1969, which does have a marital status question.

So, for part of the 60s in California, at least, your license had your marital status.

I recall on the Mary Tyler Moore Show that Mary went through a man’s wallet…

Mary) I’m pretty sure he’s divorced

Rhoda) How can you tell

Mary) I saw on his driver’s license where it says married, he crossed it off

I would presume it would vary according to juridiction. My drivers licence does not have marital status, but it does have blood group.

I got my first licience in Calif in 1963 it had married with a yes or no.
My present licience has me at 6 feet, 170 pounds, and brown hair. 10 years ago I had to get a new picture but they did not change the discription. I still have a full head of hair, but the only color is gray, If I weighed under 200 I would be glad, and I can not even lie about being 6 feet.

I saw a New Jersey license, and it had “Sex” with yes or no.
