My friend came up with a story that Fidel Castro went to the US to see a baseball game apparently because of his love of the game. I’ve explained to my friend how politically implausible that was as well as a hell of a security risk! Since I had never heard this story (he heard it on TV, from a sportscaster nonetheless) I’ve briefly search on the internet and there seems to be a sports legend where Fidel Castro tried out for the Washington Senators before his guerilla days but no info as to where and when these stories surfaced. So what’s the scoop?
I don’t know if he attended a baseball game, but he has been in the U.S. at least once or twice since he came to power (to attend meeting of the United Nations). He also spoke at a church in Harlem. He may well have attended a ball game or two while in New York.

If I recall correctly, Fidel did attend the game in Baltimore when the Orioles played the Cuban National team. I might be thinking of the game that was played in Cuba though. That is the only time that I have ever heard of Fidel attending a baseball game in the US.
IIRC, Castro tried out for the Boston Red Sox.
I also notice a pattern…Harvard (Crimson), Boston RED sox, and then communism…hmmm…

He attended a game but it was called at the 6th inning when too many of the Cuban players defected and started playing on the American team.
