I keep hearing stories that Ernest Hemingway paid a sum of money to either Robert McAlmon or Bill Bird for the publication of one of his first two books. This seems unlikely, since I’ve also heard that both Robert and Bill had earlier paid for some of Hem’s travel expenses. Does anybody know the straight dope?
