Did I buy bad memory? (Win32 error)

Sorry, it isn’t 100%. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. That’s why 512 megs is considered to be the trouble-free limit.

Sorry, I wasn’t clear… I took the new RAM back to the store before reading your previous post about the MaxFileCache.

However, even after removing the extra RAM, I’m still having some major issues (stemming, I believe, from a scandisk and defrag I carried out a week or so ago). I’m missing DLLs, having trouble with the computer freezing up on shutdown, freezing up when the screensaver comes on, etc. as nauseum. The more I try to fix it, the worse it gets!

I’m down to the final solution: reformatting the HD and reinstalling everything! I’m downloading new drivers for everything even as I type here. I’ll probably do the reformat tomorrow or the next day… wish me luck!

See, now if you had Windows XP, you could just do a System Restore to before you started having the problem.

Might the problem have been that you were using one 512 stick and 2 256 sticks (going from what you said in the OP, you had 512 MB over 2 of 3 slots)? I’m not familiar with older systems/OSes, since I’m relatively new to building comps (me and the hubby built two new kickin desktops about a month ago with the help of friends, I will NEVER buy a pre-packaged comp again!!)…but I’m pretty sure in at least the newer systems you need to have matched sets of memory. One 512 stick and 2 256 sticks won’t work, you’d have to either have all 256 meg sticks, or all 512s.

Astro, I noticed in a Pit thread you’d wanted the momery for bettering your performance of EverQuest.

First of all, it’s always nice to see another EQ player (4+ years on Fennin Ro here). Secondly, wanted to let you know in case you hadn’t already heard, that EQ is shifting to an entirely new graphics engine soon, that’s supposed to be far less memory intensive. =) I saw a screenshot of the South Karana Aviak Village with a current screenshot and the new engine’s screenshot of the same thing and the difference is simply astounding!! You’re gonna love it. =)

Really? No, I hadn’t heard that… I’ll have to check that out! A new graphics engine would be great!

EQ wasn’t the only reason that I wanted more RAM, but it was a factor, LOL. And you’re right about the System Restore feature of XP… that sure would be nice right about now. (I’m reformatting the HD on my desktop computer right now).

But the problem wasn’t the fact that I didn’t have matched sets of RAM ( yes, some configurations do require matched sets, and there’s even a type of RAM [Rambus? I’d look it up, but I’m kinda busy right now] that requires blank “filler” cards to fill each empty RAM slot to complete the circuit!). It was simply the fact that WIN98 can’t handle that much (at least without some kind of work-around that I might play with if I hadn’t already taken the RAM back.). Anyways, a re-formatting I will go! With any luck, I might even get some EQ in tonight…
