When i goto run defrag with my os (windows 98 SE) i get the error message ‘not enough conventional memory, free up some memory by closing programs and try again’. So i close all the programs and still the same error.
I also goto run scan disk, same problem…
So i figure re-installing windows 98 SE will work… wrong… it wont reinstall windows because there isn;t enough conventional memory… as the error message has told me.
Im really not sure about this but most experts agree that re installing windows hardly ever helps with those problems(it sounds like a hardware problem to me) and reinstalling can also mess up your system.
Back to the problem: I assuming by conventional memory it means RAM in which case check you dont have anything running on the taskbar (not things like the internet explorer window you are reading this from now, but to the right near the clock. A lot of companies put lots of little programs running in the background, and these can use memory and slow down your system. Ive seen some where the icons take up half the taskbar - sheesh) also check how much RAM you have. This is made worse by a larger HD.
It could possibly (though it sounds unlikely) be hard disk space. The computer needs space for a ‘swap file’ on the disk to be able to run defrag properly. I think it needs about 10% of the hard disk. Hope this helps.
Here’s an easy fix that will work most of the time. When you boot the computer, try pressing F8 constantly until you see a menu come up. Then go into Safe Mode. If you don’t already know, Safe Mode loads Windows with minimal drivers and programs running. If you get the same problem, then you probably have a leak in one of your RAM sticks, and tht can be fixed rather inexspensivly by purchasing a new one…good luck
