I saw the Adam Ruins Everything episode about Hollywood where it talks about the Hays Code for movies.
In it, Adam says that the Hays Code prohibited the movies from depicting white slavery, but depicting black slavery was just fine. He wears a smug expression disapproving of how racist the old days were, while showing an illustration of a white male farm worker in chains as opposed to a black male farm worker in chains.
Is he (or are his researchers) not aware that the term white slavery then referred to the sexual trafficking of women into prostitution? The Hays Code prohibited salacious depictions of brothels and rape. It had nothing to do with not allowing movies to show white people being forced to work for no pay. There was plenty of that in old movie serials about Flash Gordon, and in Biblical movies, and movies about ancient times. Hell, what was Spartacus about?
For such a know-it-all show, I’m surprised by this level of ignorance.
