Well, whatever she was doing, she could piss a good three feet up the wall, and it stank to high heaven. She certainly was anxious, and we had her on antidepressants for a while to try to help with it. Moving out of the house we were in helped more than anything, I think.
She died in January of liver cancer. I suppose it’s possible that it was starting all the way back then. Or maybe she just didn’t like living with a three-year-old who wanted to hug her, her brother who wanted to steal all her food, and the cats looking in from outside and taunting them both.
Like everyone else has said, if Ted’s good with it, it sounds like a good solution. A human would probably hate being confined, but it actually sounds like he is feeling more secure in lockdown; cats aren’t humans, and they don’t think like we do.
Honestly I think my older two cats would absolutely LOVE that “apartment”. One for each! I think it’s a wonderful thing you’ve done, giving your cat the very best you can give him instead of doing what so many people would have done: either throwing him outside or having him put down.
It’s an awesome unit you’ve constructed. And as long as you, Ted, and the vet, are happy with the arrangements, that’s all that matters. Good on you for finding a solution for you both.
(That said, I could not live like that. Not because of the construction job, but I just couldn’t keep my pet in a cage 24/7. It’s not in me, I would not be able to sleep at night. I could never keep a bird, either. I would make a terrible prison guard, I’m sure. I would have chosen, instead, to find Ted a home where he needn’t be caged all the time. But, as this thread clearly demonstrates, I am the exception, not the rule! Takes all kinds to make a world!)
I think someone who homes 8 healthy cats can recognize when a cat is happy. Since you say he’s happy, I believe you. And since he’s happy, this is a good thing.
you most definitely did the right thing in my opinion. Hw is still in his home with a mom that loves him, he still has contact with his buds. He has a good life!
