Did Joe DiMaggio ever confirm sending flowers to Marilyn's grave?

Someone sent fresh flowers to Marilyn Monroe’s grave
twice a week for years. Joe DiMaggio is the person who
is supposed to have sent them. I had heard that DiMaggio
never confirmed nor denied this, but all the references
I can find claim it as a fact.

It would have been consistent with DiMaggio’s character
not to have confirmed or denied the rumor. DiMaggio was
shy, and rarely talked to the press after he retired
from baseball. His marriage to Monroe was a sensitive
subject for him, and even his friends didn’t talk to
him about it. He rarely showed emotion in public.

So, which is it? Did DiMaggio ever admit to sending
the flowers, or is it just a rumor?

This sounds like it was more than just a rumor.

For two decades, DiMaggio had flowers delivered to Marilyn’s grave twice a week. “I firmly believe,” said Brad Dexter, “that all the years that [DiMaggio] made those visitations to her grave site and left flowers. . . he was still in love with her, but also [did it] out of a great sense of guilt. Because I think he helped contribute to her demise. I’m firmly convinced that if he had behaved differently, they would have had a good marriage. He destroyed it–and he felt that guilt.”

Question from Carol: did Joe send flowers to Marilyns grave until he died? I heard he always had them sent every year.

Richard Ben Cramer: Joe sent flowers twice a WEEK to Marilyn’s grave – roses always, which were her favorite. But in the mid-1980’s, the increasingly cheap and irascible DiMaggio stopped sending the flowers: People were stealing his roses!

In high school, the mother of a friend of mine worked for Joe DiMaggio - I think as a manicurist. IIRC, she confirmed this rumour to me.
