Even if they are supposedly looking to fill the second trainer position, that doesn’t mean you’re in the clear. The calendar is running out on 2014 and late December terminations aren’t unheard of, this goes double if there’s not much training that goes on the last couple weeks of the year…
Unlike other industries, for us Q4 is prime time to prepare for Q1 tax season. My location is actually a specialty site, specifically selected for its ability to service a portion of our portfolio in their language, hint hint
I can’t say any type of discrimination has occurred. The majority of our staff is Hispanic (including myself, HR and the AVP)
I will post updates as often as the Dopers will tolerate.
Side note, how weird that everyone thinks I’m male…I thought my posts were decidedly feminine!
Don’t take it personally; “He” is the default.
Yeah, NVME702-redux doesn’t convey any gender, and most Dopers are men.
That alone would be enough to tell me that your days are numbered and they intend to either fire you or make life miserable for you so you will quit.
Well my number came up. Got the call to release my training class 15 minutes early for lunch and to go to HR.
Site Director, New HR rep and my boss via telephone to let me know that they hate to have these conversations but that they have decided to part ways amicably. Gave me a meh severance package for two weeks plus remaining PTO and I could leave right now. My direct manager said that “it” wasn’t working out.
Not surprised, I’ve been looking for several weeks now without very much of a bite, but I will soldier on. Husband gave me a sweet “don’t worry I love you, I’ll work harder to help us make ends meet, but I believe in you and I know you will find something else.”
I guess everyone at the office is in shock, very much out of left field for this and now NO ONE feels ok. I don’t know how I feel. Not too much shock, a smidgen of disappointment and so far just a slight ache for the potential financial upheaval if this process takes too long.
Just wanted to submit an update…and I guess I may be on the boards more often now that there is soooooooooo much time available…between applying for jobs online.
Today I dislike being wrong more than usual.
Best of luck with the new job search.
Sucks, sorry and I hope you do find something fast.
When I worked for a company, my training class were half way through training and they decided to eliminate the branch we were in … some people opted to bail out immediately, others took the option to finish training and get shipped off to another branch, and a few others like myself opted to stay and ride out the closing, which was the buy out package at the end of IIRC 4 months. I ended up working the ride out, and ended up with another 9 months on top of that for a different reason.
[In retrospect, I should have taken the option to get shipped to the Texas call center, I would have gone at the Ct rate of $18.50/hour instead of the new hire in rate in Texas of $8.50. It would have meant sticking out just over 2 years before mrAru got out of the Navy, and I would have been able to afford the housing in Texas easily. It wasn’t as if we were not used to being separated for long times anyways.]
Did they not at least tell you something more specific than “it’s not working out?” They may not be required to, but my understanding is that it’s best practice, as without such an account a firm is more open to accusations of discrimination etc.
Bummer. Wishing you luck in getting a new position soon.
Depends on if it is an “at will” state like Wisconsin is. I worked at a firm for TWO YEARS and was called in and told “It’s not working.” In reality, one of my bosses inexplicably hated me, so I am sure he had something to do with it. Sucks, but that’s the way the law works here. And I didn’t even think of charging them with age discrimination as I wasn’t 50 yet, but I don’t know what the cut-off is here.
Actually, that’s backwards. From a liability standpoint the best practice is to offer no reason at all - and if pressed, to offer a platitude like “it’s not working out” or “we are moving in a different direction”. If you give the employee concrete reasons you are inviting the employee to call you on those reasons, and if you don’t have documentation then the reason you did give looks like a pretext.
Age discrimination starts at 40.
