Last night I watched the HBO production “RKO 281” about the battle between Orson Welles and William Randolph Hearst over the making and release of “Citizen Kane”.
“RKO 281” includes 2 scenes in which Welles and Hearst purportedly met:
-
Welles and Henry Mancawiecz (co-writer of “Citizen Kane”) are guests of Hearst at a San Simian dinner party (along with Clark Gable and Carole Lombard - Hollywood friends of Marion Davies, Hearst’s actress-mistress).
-
By sheer happenstance, Welles and Hearst share an elevator in NYC the night before “Citizen Kane” opens. Welles invites Hearst to the premiere and Hearst denounces Welles for the untold damage he’s done and becoming what he railed against, i.e. just like Hearst.
Scene 1 I can buy: Marion Davies naturally had a lot of Hollywood friends and they were often invited to San Simian. It makes sense that the “wonder boy” Welles could have garnered an invitation.
Scene 2 sounds like absolute Hollywood bullshit.
Anyone know the Straight Dope?
