I caught it immediately.
I was talking to my son about the flags and ceremony and all and was only half listening, but suddenly thought “wait, did she sing the wrong line?” But her face didn’t betray her and no one else in the room said anything, so I thought I just misheard it.
Caught the flub.
If patriotic songs are sung right – the way they were written – I usually tear up. It’s my 50’s upbringing. When the songs are embellished, there’s no effect at all, just a wish that they’d hurry up and finish.
Do singers in other countries mess around with anthems?
Oops. I answered the thread title, not the poll question.
No I did not catch the flub, where “catch” means watched. I didn’t see any of it.
No, I was so annoyed at her singing style that I didn’t pay attention.
I don’t understand it. Everyone makes mistakes, particularly under pressure but what the gold plated fuck?
I would think an adult American would have heard or sang the national anthem enough times that knowing the lyrics wouldn’t be an issue.
Setting that aside though, if someone asked you to perform any task in front of a crowd, wouldn’t you practice?
Yeah, I caught it (on the radio). As did Boomer:
Harlan (in stentorian voice): On the big screen, close-ups of some of the players. Their eyes misting up, tears on their cheeks. Obviously an emotional moment.
Esiason (smartassedly): Maybe they were crying because she forgot all the words.
You’d think Christina would take some time off from thinking up a baby name to treat it more seriously. At least as seriously as a Presidential Inaguration. We’re talking about the anthem at the Superbowl! You’d never see the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court flub up something like that, because if someone asked you to perform any task in front of a crowd, wouldn’t you practice?
Misunderstood, but voted no, should have voted yes, but I didn’t watch any of the superbowl. had I seen it I would have caught it.
We missed it. I know the lyrics, but we were too busy criticizing her singing style.
I only saw it on the news and I can’t help but wonder if some of these performers don’t intentionally screw up for the publicity. She wasn’t getting much attention before this.
Either that or they worry so much about screwing up that they end up doing it anyway.
I caught it immediately, but I know the words very well.
I was watching it, thinking she was singing poorly. When she sung the wrong words, it only took a few seconds to grab the remote and skip ahead.
Look, the lyrics are not that hard, people. Listen to them and they make sense. They form sentences with meaning. It’s not just a collection of jumbled words in random order.
I wasn’t paying much attention, but something did seem to be amiss from the crowd’s reaction. However, I didn’t know what the actual screw-up was until I read it in the news today.
As soon as it came out of her mouth. Shortly I muted the whole screechy mess.
Maybe if she wasn’t treating the music as just a collection of jumbled notes in random order she’d be less likely to do that with the lyrics?
Wrong Christina. Aguilera not Applegate.
I didn’t see the anthem, but heard two different news reports on it after the game.
Apparently, you either didn’t like or get my satirical take on Chopper9760’s rant.
I was in the kitchen making wings during the anthem, and my husband actually changed the channel away from the anthem before the lyrics flub because he said her singing was painful. So we both missed it.
Nope, missed it. Bravo for that, but I’m not sure what the line about the baby name is for. Seems gratuitous, and (obviously) distracted from the real point.
Exactly. Ridiculous, overwrought notes in all the wrong places. It seems like every one of the melisma crowd does that. They don’t seem to realize that these notes they hit convey meaning. Don’t sing benign words like “and” with all the angst of your best friend having just died.
