Did you catch Christina Aguilera's flub at the Super Bowl?

I’m ashamed to say that I didn’t. I can’t say I’m too familiar with the lyrics anyway (certainly not to the point where I could recite them from memory), but I just wasn’t paying that close attention to it, and didn’t realize she flubbed it until I read a story about it later on.

I didn’t catch it, and I thought it sounded pretty good, but I wasn’t paying serious attention to it.

Of course I caught it. It was pretty glaring. An awful performance in general too. Why can’t singers ever just respect the song and sing it normally?

What was the flub?

“…what so proudly we watched…”

I caught it; I was thinking “didn’t she already sing that line?”

I can’t sing the US national anthem (heck, I can’t even sing!) but I hear it all the time before hockey games and definitely noticed that something was missing.

Did ya catch that there’s already a thread on the topic?

Though Aguilera’s performance is what sparked that thread, it was really as much about celebrities butchering the national anthem as it was her specific rendition.

With this thread, I’m just trying to ferret out whether people were able to catch the flub as it happened.

Was too busy timing it. I guess it’s easy to come in under 1:56 when you mess up a line.

I wonder if Vegas called “no action” on that particular bet. She held “brave” an impressively long time by my count. IIRC, the line on that was 6 seconds, and she pushed it out to 10.

I couldn’t tell you exactly what the flub was but I do remember thinking at that exact moment that something did not sound right. I even commented to my wife “did she just screw that up? I don’t think she said that right.” Then I watched the players reactions to see if they caught it but nobody really seemed to flinch so I thought maybe I was just hearing things.

I was much more distressed by her needless embellishment and caterwauling than a tiny and easily missed change in lyrics.

I know all the words to the anthem, but I can’t pay close attention to wailers like Christina. It was on and I was half-watching, so i didn’t catch it. I almost always half-watch TV.

Honestly I didn’t remember who sang the anthem 2 seconds after she was announced. I remember thinking something didn’t sound right but even reading the line here is as close as I got to noticing it.

I caught it, and it surprised the heck out of me. I always thought that they pre-recorded things like that at big events like this and then had the performer come out and lip-sync it to avoid those kinds of mistakes.

Ii didn’t notice it, but I was in a room full of singers, and they immediately jumped all over it.

Yeah, and it was pretty amusing because right after they panned to a player and he looked to the guy next to him with a “what the fuck was that” look.

That was the least of the damage she did to that song though.

I didn’t. I guess I really do hate America. Who knew?

I missed it. I was making a sandwich.

4th stanza

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war’s desolation,
Blest with vict’ry and peace, may the Heav’n - rescued land
Praise the Pow’r that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, for our cause is just,
And this be our motto–“In God is our trust.”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Had to learn the 4th stanza at our high school…those were the days.

I was only half paying attention but I knew somethig was off about it. It was kind of a “wait, what?” type of moment.
