I lucked out with my present employer – I’ve got roughly a 15-20 minute drive each way, most of the time against the traffic.
In my line of work sudden transfers are part of the job. With my last employer, I worked as close at 5 minutes from home up to an hour’s commute each way.
I had it easy, compared to some of my then co-workers. A lot of them lived either in RI or on the MA/RI border. Some had up to a 2-hour commute each way, 6 days a week.
