How far do you commute?

Having recently moved from a midtown location 12 miles from my office to a house 1 1/2 miles away from work, I’d like to hear how far you travel from home to work, school, on a daily or nearly daily basis. And by what mode of travel.

I drive my car and it takes 3 minutes max.

I am considering getting a bicycle, if it weren’t for the narrow lanes on most of the 45-55 mph 2-lane roads and the fact that it thunderstorms often when I get off work.

I could/should walk but I would have to get up earlier and (see storms).

So,

  1. How many miles (km) from home to daily destination?

  2. How long does it take (average)?

  3. Travel mode(s)?

[ul][li]33 miles[/li][li]40-45 minutes[/li]Yamaha YZF-R1 (lane splitting mode)[/ul]

Was: 35 miles one-way through a mountain canyon. 40-50 minutes, depending on my mood. My Focus ZX3 is no sportscar, but hauls a fair amount of ass.

Is: 20 miles in the car (half-hour, some surface streets), then another 65 (2 hours, all freeway on the vanpool).

Husband: 90 miles one-way through freeway, over mountains, and through downtown LA. Hour and a half. Kawi Z750S.

  1. 65 miles
  2. 70 minutes
  3. Car, half interstate, half state highway.

1/2 mile.
20 minutes
My two feet.

I use to work 2 blocks from my house before both of us moved. It was great!

  1. 50 mi, one way.
  2. 50-60 minutes, depending on route and traffic.
  3. About half is 2 lane; the rest divided surface road or interstate. In a car, of course…
  1. Roughly 4 miles.

  2. At 7.10am, about 25 minutes. Coming home between 5pm and 7pm, about 45 minutes.

  3. London Underground (the infamous Northern Line).

Five blocks.

Depends…walk in decent weather and if I don’t need the car to run around to meetings, etc. during the day.

Takes ten minutes, tops, either way.

I drive a Honda CRV so gas consumption is really low.

Love it!

  1. 13.8 miles

  2. 25-30 min.

  3. Town and county roads mostly
    3a. 93 C1500 or 85 Olds Cutlass

You have my sympathies.

Roughly 30 min. door to door via overground train (Greenwich to Waterloo East).

  1. Roughly twenty miles,
  2. Approximately thirty minutes.
  3. Mostly highway and interstate via car.
  1. Not sure.
  2. About 35-40 minutes door to door.
  3. London Underground (St. John’s Wood-Moorgate) and a bit of walking.
  1. 36 miles
  2. 65 minutes, +/-
  3. An '02 Kia Rio, which gets decent mileage; combination of two-lane and four-lane roads with lights, mostly, though there are two short stretches of expressway (one of which is currently under construction).

12 miles, 30 minutes give or take. Mostly on four lane road with stoplights (what’s that called?). I did take the highway, but discovered it takes longer recently. Car.

I would take the bus, but it takes the better part of two hours with three transfers and a short train ride.

A different set of destinations each day of the week, totalling about seven hours and 200 miles, mostly on small rural roads. Shitty Nissan Micra.

  1. 50 miles.
  2. 50 minutes.
  3. Honda Civic EX. Pretty nice, decent power, 34-36 mph. The route is great - 35 minutes of rolling countryside with no traffic and about 15 minutes of freeway (on the way to work…going home is, obviously, the reverse).
  1. Just over 3 miles
  1. 20-25 minutes
  2. 2-5 minute walk (depends on which bus I catch), remainder is bus

25 miles
45 minutes
In a car; 13 miles of city streets, 12 miles of freeway

About an hour, door to door. 15 minutes walking, then 30 - 40 minutes on the train, then 5 minutes walking. Sometimes if I’m leaving work after rush hour, I take an express bus home; it takes the same amount of time if traffic isn’t bad, but it runs along the lake, which is nice.

  1. Just over 3 miles.
2&3) 12-15 minutes by bike, or 5 minutes by car.

I only drive if it’s raining hard. Or need to drive somewhere after work. Or I’m late for work. :o
