My longest ever was 2 legs on an airliner, 2500 miles each way, plus driving 20-30 minutes on each end, plus waiting for parking lot shuttle busses. Good news was I only did one round trip a week.
Shortest was walking 2 short blocks from my quarters to my squadron in the service. Or much the same deal in college.
Current is 25 miles via freeway each way at 70mph average, which means slowing to 60 in spots & cruising 85 most of the way. Negligible traffic unless it’s snowing. it’s handy that my house & the office are both within 1/2 mile of the ramps, so I have all but zero slow surface driving.
About 15 km. 5 Km. neighborhood traffic, 10 km. freeway.
About 20 minutes, unless I get tied up leaving the neighborhood at either end…
I’m a bit unusual in that I live **inside **the city (Tel-Aviv) and work **outside **of it – hence I normally don’t run into traffic en-route (but, like I said, sometimes a snarl-up at one of the two ends)
Fortunatley I not work pretty close to my home, so my “commute” is a scant 20 minutes each way. By bus.
However, I did 90-minute commutes each way between 2001 and 2005. Also by bus, so books were my best friends on those trips. At least 'til I got an MP3 player.
1. How many miles (km) from home to daily destination?
Just a couple miles. Since I work at the college, I go to the same place for classes as I do work.
2. How long does it take (average)?
In the mornings, about 20 minutes. It’s all downhill, pretty nice ride. On the way home, opposite, all uphill and about 30-40 minutes. If I’m driving the car, maybe 5-10 minutes.
**
3. Travel mode(s)?**
Usually my bicycle, I enjoy riding it, but I’m lazy and often take my time on the way. If I drive, it’s either the 01 Hyundai (25-30 mpg) or the 95 Nissan (27 mpg avg.).
Usually takes about 35 minutes or so. Two lane mountain hi-way. And a bit of gravel road. No traffic up here. Sometimes I don’t see another car for the first 15 miles or so. But then, I leave at 6am.
I use 4x4 6 months out of the year in an SUV. Winter is here in September. We got 29 inches of snow in the last 2 days. Sometimes 4x4 is not enough. But I can be proud to say that I have only missed 2 days of work in the last 14 years due to weather. One was April 19th 1995 the day of the Murrah building bombing. Snowed like crazy that night. Couple of feet.
The other just last year on October 10th. Columbus day I believe. I saw the snow, knew that I did not need to be at work, and it was sort of a holiday for me anyway (I work for the GOV [floating holidays]) and went back to bed.
10-15 minutes by foot, depending on how fast I’m walking. Less than a mile away.
In undergrad, I had to take the subway and the bus AND walk for a total of 1 hour and 15 minutes just to get to school. The only upside was that I always had time to finish my reading on my way to class.
About 25 minutes going to work in the mornings, about 35-40 minutes back home in the afternoon (more traffic).
By car. It’d probably take 3 times as long to take the bus, because there’s no direct route. It’d take about the same amount of time if I took the new commuter train route, but the trains don’t start early enough. Seems everyone thinks the world doesn’t start until 8 am.
