Back when Obama was elected in 2008, I really thought some crazed racist would assassinate him before he was even inaugurated. And while he’s been president I still thought that maybe it would happen. Even with all the Secret Service protecting him, I thought some maniac would find a way to do it. There are so many deranged people out there, many of whom are racists, many of whom have guns. It seemed inevitable. Thank god I was wrong.
All modern Presidents have had serious assassination attempts but the Secret Service is good at its job in general. It really isn’t about having someone willing to give it a try. There are plenty of those no matter who the President is. It is a matter of the SS being able to stop it before they are successful. I am sure there are people making serious plans to assassinate Trump right now and a few that will try to follow through just as they have with the predecessors.

I wondered about it, but I wasn’t seriously concerned. All the presidents who have died in office were victims of the Zero Year Curse – a curse that has now been broken.
It’s not impossible for a president to die in office from some other reason, but the odds of such a thing are vastly lower. I figure that if George Bush can survive a grenade, there isn’t much that’s likely to kill any president.
Unfortunately, there’s still time. But let’s hope such an awful thing does not come to pass.

I thought someone would try, I know there have been a few embryonic plans thwarted and I’m sure the Secret Service have been busy in general to nip these things in the bud. And will undoubtedly remain so. America be cray-cray these days.
I thought there would be at least a couple quite serious, well planned, attempts that would come at least very close.
The SS must be doing a very good job at preventing a lot of nutjobs from even getting into position to try something.
When he was first elected, I expected there to be attempts to take his life, ones that progressed to the point of shots being fired or explosives detonated. I’m glad I was wrong.

But yes, at least for his first term, I thought Obama was at much higher risk than most Presidents, because of the confluence of President, Democrat, odd name and black. Gets alllllll the crazies stirred up.

Anyway, yes. I had a hard time watching his first inauguration parade for that very reason.
Like others have said, I thought there would be a serious attempt (i.e., shots fired) on his life at least once during his presidency, that there was not shows either that (1) The Secret Service and other agencies are very good at their jobs, (2) That the Obama-haters really are knuckleheads who couldn’t organize a successful orgy at a whorehouse, or (3) Just maybe, this country is becoming civilized.

Was more worried than usual. Also worried about the incoming administration more than usual (and not because I love Trump so much, but I can hardly think of anything that would be worse for the country than having something bad happen to him).
It’s been at the back of my mind right through the end of his farewell appearance.
If it had happened, I would have been shocked, but not surprised.
Didn’t really “think he would be” though sure I could imagine some nut would fire shots or come up with a plan that fell apart at the looking for accomplices stage. The WH mail-clearing office probably would have to deal with a trailerful of envelopes with unknown white powders. And perhaps someone would throw a shoe just to create a tradition.
However back in '08 I did know some people who outright fully expected that he would not live to seek reelection, because …“They”… would never let a Black man be president and rule and “They” would teach us a lesson about who’s in charge in America.

My retort to that was that The Conspiracy is today sophisticated enough to neutralize a President w/o having to actually kill him.
I wouldn’t have been surprised (nothing much surprises me since say 2000) but I figured he was pretty safe. If anyone did get close enough to make headlines out of it I figured out it would be someone from the far left angry that he wasn’t the full-blown Socialist they had hoped for. Besides, if you look at the track record, a lot of the attempts we can name off the top of our heads were more leftists against Republicans. That made me feel President Obama was fairly safe.
Because even the crazies aren’t dumb enough to kill a President who has only a week left in his term. :dubious:
