Did your paper run the masturbation Doonesbury strip today?

Here in Topeka, Kansas the Capital-Journal ran the masturbation strip. I agree, tame.

Did my local paper run the strip? I wouldn’t know. I stopped reading Doonesbury after we pulled out of Vietnam. What a dinosaur.

I’m back. Not surprisingly, the SF Chronicle ran the masturbation one. Unfortunately, not a very funny one (particularly since the humor was largely rooted in being familiar with Boopsie’s backstory).

Interesting results, although not everyone mentioned where they were from… Still, thanks to all!

Yeah, I saw that, too. I was surprised at first, but then I started thinking about it and realized that the Tulsa World is actually a fairly liberal paper. Years ago when “For Better or For Worse” had the storyline about the gay kid, the Tulsa World ran that one, too. So, I guess in the end, it’s not really that surprising that they ran the masturbation strip today.

By the way, it’s great to see another Tulsan on the SDMB!

The CIA intern strip was funnier than the masturbation strip. I can’t blame the papers that substituted it.

Thanks, cheddarsnax

I don’t read the strip myself but my wife say’s that
Long Island’s Newsday ran the intern strip.

Assholes!

Yeah but when did they become prudes?

I wonder how many of the papers that withheld the strip published a news item about the study.

Seattle PI/Times ran the Intern strip.

Ms. magazine claimed, a long time ago, that orgasm will greatly relieve menstrual cramps.

My local paper ran the Intern strip. but I found the masturbation strip on the Internet anyway.

For many years, I had the Time Magazine cover that featured Doonesbury. I completely love that strip. It’s clever, painfully accurate and the humor is frequently so subtle that it’s not a hammer, but rather a fillet knife.

And, there’s nothing wrong with knowing Boopsie’s backstory. It’s like knowing who said, " A cynic is a man who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing ".

Cartooniverse

Chicago Tribune ran the masturbation strip. I didn’t think it was super funny (though I did chuckle at the “self-dating” line) but I did raise an eyebrow and think “This should get a few letters to the editor.”

Vancouver Sun: the “intern” strip.

Someone link me to the other strip, please?!

I grew up in west suburban Cleveland (Ohio), where my parents still live. When Mom called today for her weekly chat, I asked her about the topic of this thread. She told me that she had wondered why the Plain Dealer (Cleveland paper) ran a strip about the CIA internship, while the Chronicle-Telegram (which is based in Elyria and serves Lorain County and environs) went with a masturbation gag. Interesting that the comparatively “cosmopolitan” and “rural” publications acted contrary to my expectations…

Masturbation strip

Thanks, cheddarsnax. Now I know what I missed out on.

F_X

And I appreciated the “dating yourself” / “self-dating” thing.

The Oregonian, largest newspaper in the Beaver State, with a Sunday circ of 425,000 ran the masturbation strip, which kind of surprised me. it’s an odd mixture, accused by the liberals of being conservative and by the conservatives of being of liberal.

Which generally means they actually have fair reporting. As someone who’s usually a centrist, I gauge myself by the amount of flak I get from opponents on both sides…
