Diet & Excersize (cant spell!)

Is it actully possible to gain weight when you’re dieting and excersicing daily? Is tehre certain people thsi happens to? I have a problem here!

Muscle is supposed to weigh more than fat. I’m sure a cite can readily be found on Google, etc.

Not only that, but if you don’t eat enough your body will begin to store food. The human body is made to combat starvation and dehydration, so when you don’t eat or drink enough, your body conversely stores extra food or water. That’s why diets like Weight Watchers are so good - there’s a minimum amount of food you should eat a day. However, Violet was right - muscle does was much more than fat. So, if you’re building muscle you might gain a little weight.

I don’t know how this works, but I’ve heard about people who somehow gain weight when they take certain medicines.

If you take in fewer calories than you are expending, than no, it’s not possible to gain weight. Your body may try to compensate to a starvation diet by not burning as many calories as it would normally, but eventually you must lose weight if you take in fewer calories than you expend.

“Dieting” means many things. While there are lots of fancy ways to diet, reducing the number of calories you consume is what is most important.

Yes - as others have pointed out - you could very easily gain muscle weight unless you were eating too few calories. It would actually be a very healthy way to shape up and get fit.

If you think this is happening to you, talk to a personal trainer who can measure your body to find out if this is happening (calipers etc). You should also be able to tell yourself if you are getting fitter, jogging is getting easier, whatever. I’ve only been going to the gym - infrequently and for very short periods of time - for about a month, but I have already noticed a huge difference in fitness in terms of how far and how fast I can go on the treadmill.

With a diet - unless you’re following something amazingly strict you need to keep a food diary. It is AMAZING how much slips through. I can’t think of a day when I haven’t eaten some little extra snack I didn’t intend to. Actually - because of the exercise I’m doing and the fact that the other stuff I’m eating is very calorie-low - it’s probably a good thing I “lapse” - it makes the weight loss slower but steadier, this is much better for the body than starving it off.

Also remember that you should look at your calorie intake over a week, rather than over a day.

Also remember that (especially women) can put on several pounds/kilos just in fluid retention throughout the month.
