Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau has died.

Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau has died at the age of 86. He was the standard by which other singers’ interpretations were measured, and his discography, particularly in German Lieder, will never be equalled.

Here he is singing Bach’s “Ich Habe Genug”.

Mahler’s “Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen”.
May you rest in peace, Dietrich.

The passing of a legend.

I had absolutely no idea he was still alive. What an amazing voice.

Wow. I heard a recording on the radio of him doing “The people that walked in darkness” aria from the Messiah. Wow.

I never really warmed to his voice, and very much preferred Hermann Prey, but I always had a huge respect for him.

R.I.P., Fi-Di.

Here’s a youtube of his singing

I had no idea who he was until I saw the article re his passing.

I have about 10 albums with his glorious voice.

I will now play one.
:frowning:

Finally, disco is dead.

Sorry.:o

And this morning saw Carl Orf’s “Carmina Burana”.
Just some nice, sweet morning music

Gunther in the Solti/Vienna Philharmonic Ring.

He recorded Tristan too, did he not?

An excellent voice.

That would really surprise me, since he was a Baritone. He was also better known for his interpretations of Schubert’s Lieder, specifically Die Winterreise, which he recorded eight times over the course of his career.

The Opera, not the role.

Kurwenal.

Oh, right, it looks like he did: with Furtwängler and Kleiber.

Even though he was 86, and retired a while ago, I was sad when I heard of his passing.

When all the kids at school were playing Michael Jackson’s Thriller non-stop, I was listening to Fischer-Dieskau sing Papageno in Mozart’s Magic Flute.

Classical signing is often seen in popular culture through its most opulent excesses, but Fischer-Dieskau was a master in the art of not over-doing things. He was good taste incarnate.

Schubert – Gutte Nacht
Mozart – The Magic Flute
Beethoven – Symphony #9

Merged two threads on Fischer-Dieskau’s passing.

A nice rumination on the revered but irreverently nicknamed “Dirty Fisher Dishcloth” and classical music in general on Stephen Fry’s blog today.

I liked it.
