I was just watching Good Morning America and they mentioned that RGB would be lying in State at the Supreme Court and then taken to the House where she would be lying in Repose. They also mentioned that Rosa Parks laid in State at the Supreme Court and then corrected themselves by saying she was lying in Honor at the Supreme Court. What differences if any are between them? Like do you get more time or different services for each?
I’m not sure about lying in honour, but with the other two, I believe it’s about location rather than type of service. Lying in State for most countries means lying in the the principal government building; in the US case, it looks like that’s the Capitol, at least according to Wiki. That doesn’t quite square with what you said though - you sure they got it the right way around?
Well it was Good Morning America so that’s why I asked. I’m guessing that lying in state at the Supreme Court makes since since she was a member of the court.
This text article on the Good Morning America website says the opposite; she will be lying in repose at the Supreme Court and lying in state at the Capitol, which is how the phrases are normally used.
Is it something to do with degrees of attendant ceremonial - guards of honour, members of the public allowed to file past, condolence books and so on?
Well I saw it live and they fumbled around between Rosa Parks being lying in State and Lying in Honor and then threw in the Repose and State thing for Justice Ginsberg. So I just kind of went WTF? So I had to ask. Perhaps the text transcript straightened it out but I’m still a bit confused. I mean they are of course lying there, but what are the differences between the way that you lay.
It seems likely that someone speaking extemporaneously got confused, which is understandable.
At the Capitol, the only difference is the name, with “state” used for public officials and “honor” for other people; “lying in honor” was first used in 1998 for two Capitol Police officers who were murdered, and has since also been used for Rosa Parks and Billy Graham.
I just read something like that. “In state” is allowed only for high government officials.
But what is repose? Not at the Capitol?
in state means military or government official in the building of government (us capital) (McCain, Lewis) they are of the state.
in honour means private citizen in the building of government (us capital) (rosa parks) they are being honoured.
in repose is anyone in a building not the seat of government (supreme court for justice rbg).
justice ginsburg will move from repose to state as she moves from the court to the capital.
Hmm, I thought the Supreme Court was the seat of the Judicial branch government.
It is, but it’s not the seat of government, nor the seat of the state. The Capitol is the seat of the legislative branch, but ceremonially it is also the seat of the government and the seat of the state.
in state and in honour can occur with in state capitals as well as the us capital.
a state senator can be in state in the government building of that state. a citizen can be in honour in the government building of a commonwealth.
