Differently-Abled Actors and Actresses

I still think it could work - stubborn geezer who sees his lost finger as a badge on honor in his commitment to his work, and doesn’t want it regrown. Mr Spock raises an eyebrow and comments on the logic of this.

Yes, in protest of the homogenizing influences of Federation society that rob you of your individuality!

(Personally, I’d rather have a new finger…)

Raymond Griffith blew out his vocal chords and couldn’t speak above a whisper. This wasn’t a problem in silent films, where he was a major star, but he had to retire when sound came in. Still he did appear in All Quiet on the Western Front as a dying soldier, where he only had to whisper.

I was wondering if there were any deaf actors in silent films. Have any idea?

Billy Barty had a long career in Hollywood because of his dwarfism – he was the go-to name if they needed someone of his stature. He played babies a lot.

Same for Michael Dunn, best known as Dr. Miguelito Loveless in The Wild Wild West.

Nowadays, of course, there’s Peter Dinklage

I don’t recall any, but I do know Lon Chaney had deaf parents. I could see actual deafness being a problem in silent films, since the actors had to hear the director, who was telling them what to do.

There seem to be a lot of actors who are deaf in one ear. Holly Hunter, Jane Lynch, Rob Lowe, Lou Ferrigno, and Halle Berry all have hearing issues in one ear.

Lionel Barrymore (seen in this video at 2:52), and Jay C Flippen both kept on acting even after confined to wheelchairs.

Add Warwick Davis to that list. Kenny Baker, too.

And Deep Roy.

Imogen Millais-Scott was blind during the filming of Salome’s Last Dance (1988) due to a degenerative eye disease, which actually may have added to her excellent, other-worldly performance in the title role. It stands as her last film to date owing to diabetes.

And as long as we’re talking little people, few actors of any size had the distinguished career of Angelo Rossitto:

And Meredith Eaton, who is just adorable.

Let’s add Zelda Rubinstein.

Marvin (Krondon) Jones is albino and played Tobias Whale in Black Lighting, arguably the best villain in the Arrowverse. He’s also of Black heritage.

Supposedly, according to some cast members of “Green Acres,” Hank ‘Mr. Ziffel’ Patterson was practically deaf, and sometimes a person (below camera level) would prod his foot with a stick or something to let him know it was his turn to talk.

Unrelated: Hank Patterson was the great-uncle of Tea Leoni, although whether they knew each other is not known.

After having a bacterial infection in 2009 Actor Dean Winters (Detective Cassidy from Law & Order: SVU, Mayhem in All State Insurance commercials) developed gangrene and had to have two toes and half of one thumb as well as ten subsequent operations including a skin graft.

The Irish comedian Dave Allen famously had a missing finger joint and made use of this in many jokes.

British actress Rose Ayling-Ellis (mainly known for Eastenders) won the most recent series of Strictly Come Dancing. She’s been deaf since birth.

Liz Carr is probably more known as a comedian, but she’s a very good actress and was a regular character on Silent Witness for eight years and is apparently now in The Witcher. She has Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, which has several effects, and she uses a wheelchair full time.

I’d count severe burns, personally. They can restrict movement as well as the more obvious problems they cause.

Australian comedian Adam Hills was born with only one foot. He hosts a talk show called The Last Leg, with Alex Brooker, who was born with deformed limbs, which required having one of his legs amputated when he was very young.

A girl I went to elementary school with had one full had that was about half the size of her other hand. I wonder if she had the same syndrome?

Wasn’t he Chechen??? I’m so bummed we never got more than two seasons of Barry.

So far. A third season is expected this year. Like many other things, my guess is the pandemic caused delays.
