Digestive efficiency

How efficiently does the human body use the calories in the food we eat? In other words, how much goes to energy for the body vs. what goes in one end and out the other? Does this vary between different foods and differently prepared foods?

I don’t have specifics, but an example comes to mind. Spicy/hot foods, tend to cause more salivation, therefore releasing more enzymes that break down the food more efficiently.

Eat a piece of bread with Cayenne pepper on it and it will digest more completely (releasing more energy) than a plain piece of bread.

Is that along the lines of what you are looking for?

Meep, you eat bread with cayenne pepper on it? Hmmmm.
I love spicy foods myself-but man, that sounds really gross.
