The camera’s LCD display shows “Card not initialised” and the camera will not display any pictures, although when connected to the PC I can see and manipulate all the pictures on the cameras xd removeable memory.
How do I initialise a 64M XD emory card (Fujifilm) ? I have reformatted the memory card (FAT32) but it still shows the error.
I believe that formatting one of those cards on a PC is a huge no-no. A lot of people have had to replace their cards after that because the cameras can no longer read them and there is no good way to unformat them. There was a thread on this a couple of months ago. I will try to find it because I seen to remember reading that some determined souls finally found some (complicated) solutions.
Mr. Blue Sky The camera doesn’t have a format function (not that I an find). I used the PC format function for the drive - FinPix(E : ) - excuse the space after the E and the colon…damned hardwired smileys!
legion did you ever plug your card into an Apple Mac?
I had the same problem when my brother plugged my camera into his Mac and then unplugged it without going the ‘safe remove’ route.
The solution was to plug it back in and then do the safe remove thing. The card and pictures were fine after that.
Legion, if you don’t see an on-camera format function, look a little harder or contact the manufacturer. Formatting on-camera is always best, but I have several 64MB Smartmedia cards and I have formatted them thru the computer or on camera, no problems. However, I am using a Flashpath card reader inserted in a floppy drive, and I suspect the computer’s formatting is FAT16. See if you can format with a forced FAT16.
All the Fuji cams I have seen have an on-cam format function, but sometimes their menus have to be scrolled up/down and that requirement is not obvious.
BTW, to turn off the smiley interpretation in your message, click on “disable smilies in text” in the Additional Options section of the full edit screen.
This same thing happened to me about 2 weeks ago. The problem was solved by either reformatting the card or cleaning the contacts. I did both at the same time and the card worked again next time the camera was on.
What model camera do you have? I got the same error on a Fujifilm S5100, and at first I couldn’t find the Format function (it’s hidden pretty well). On my camera, You press the Menu/OK button, scroll right to the set button, scroll to “Set up,” and then pick Format (the 3rd option). To see how to format on your camera, look in the Owner’s Manual. If you lost yours, you can can download it at the fujifilm.com support section. Also, to clean the contacts on the xD card the manual says to use a soft dry cloth.
