Digistream Star Trek MPEG's

A couple of years ago, An outfit named Digital Stream proposed to Paramount to update TOS episodes with modern CGI - like what Lucas later did with his re-releases of the Star Wars series.

As part of their proposal, They chose “The Doomsday Machine” (my favorite TOS episode) and did CGI renderings of the Enterprise, the planet killer, battle scenes, the destruction of the Constellation, and intergrated these with the episodes existing footage.

At the time, Digital Stream had a website where you could download MPEG’s of these effect shots, amd I thought it was pretty good, myself. Paramount ultimately turned down the proposal, and the website is now history. Did any Dopers save any of these clips? I’d sure like to have copies for my collection.

Here are a couple of web sites that reviewed this proposal:

Thanks a lot.

P.S. Mods, feel free to move if this becomes a debate, as I think it might.

I’m not overconcerned with it becoming a debate, but what’s the legality of this? Did Paramount authorize the release of this stuff?

Good question. IIRC, at the time of the original debate, the legality of these effects was never questioned, leaving me to believe that Digital Stream had some kind of approval from Paramount as part of their proposal.

Cool. Absent evidence to the contrary, carry on.

And yeah, this is not the place to debate whether such a product would have been a good thing (except from a purely technical perspective).

Wouldn’t that have fallen under Fair Use? There was just a handful of very short clips, which were heavily modified for the purpose of showcasing a technology.
