digital camera lenses

Hi, i just bought a canon powershot s2 is. it is a 5.0 megapixel digital camera with 12x optical zoom…i have been looking on ebay for extra lenses and filters for it(example: wide angle, 2X telephoto) my question is, do these lenses actually work and is it worth the money?? thanks. any help is appreciated

I have a 1.5x attachment for my Minolta Dimage 7Hi. I don’t use it very often, but when i do it seems to work fine, although if i use it with my camera lens set at less than maximum telephoto, i start to get vignetting in the corners.

The main reason i don’t use it too often is that i take more shots at the wide end of the lens. I don’t have a wide angle attachment, because the Minolta’s lens goes down to 28mm equivalent. It would be nice to be able to go wider on occasions, but when i need to do that i just take two (or more) overlapping pictures and join them in Photoshop or using stitching software.

My telephoto add-on lens is similar, but not identical, to this one.

If you go to the Canon forums on DPReview, you can ask people there what add-on lenses are best for your S2.

technically they work, but often its poor value for money. Take into considerations that you camara does accept them but isnt optimized to use them.

For me they are always some kind of “crutch” solution (vignetting, fuzzy corners, etc) - that help if you use it in niche-situations (bird-shooting etc… comes to mind), etc… but dont expect to use them on a daily basis or in a point-and-shoot scenario

cheers

would you guys think that this is a good deal:

?
it has all the lenses and filters id want…

That is not a brand i had heard of, but i looked on a couple of camera forums and apparently the Digital Optics brands is not considered very good.

The more frequently recommended brands for your S2 are Canon’s own lenses, as well as Raynox and Tiffen lenses.

You can see some comparisons of the wide-angle lenses here, and the telephoto lenses here.

thanks! what about these lenses…it looks like they are better than the other ones:

does this like a better deal?

Don’t know, to be honest.

I’m no expert on these things. I’ve never heard of that brand either, so you should probably Google it and see if you can find some reviews or customer feedback.

As i said, the best people to ask about this sort of stuff are the people who own the same camera, and who have experience with the add-on lenses available. That’s why i suggested dpreview.com.

Good luck.
