The new morality is at hand!

Behold the rise of the fundamentalists, the growing power of the religious right. It is a stern and righteous tide that is rising, and all good Christians, all good Jews, all good Muslims, and Hindus too. All good men come join the fight.

Brothers and sisters, I ask why?
We live in an age of tolerance. You can live your life according to your own personal moral code. Choose an alternate lifestyle! Create your own! Do what you want, whatever you do is valid. I’m ok, your ok. Why tie yourself down to a morality or a lifestyle at all, when you can just change it at will to suit your needs? Traditional morality is so repressive, and no fun at all.

No fun at all.

It sounds wonderful brothers and sisters. Do your own thing if it works for you.

Brothers and sisters, I ask why?

Why then the rise of fundamentalism? Not that I’m complaining, for all good men and women to which I know I speak have never strayed from the path of righteousness.

Can I get an Amen for all you righteous folk?

Can I get a Hallejullah for the new morality?

The new morality, which you also know and love as the old morality, is a digital morality.

Do we not live in the digital age?

Are not computers binary mechanisms?

In the olden days brothers and sisters, and, yes, in the days that are nigh unto coming, a person knew where they stood. Something was either right, or it was wrong. It wasn’t subject to interpretation. It was a 1 or a 0.

Now brothers and sisters, I’m gonna get technical here as I preach. So, bear with me. In order for a computer to do anything, for it to process data, that data must come in the form of a binary. The switch is either on, or it’s off. This my brethren, is the only way it can work.

It’s all black and right, white or wrong. There can be no in between. If there is, then, brothers and sisters, the computer does not work.

Can I have an amen for the binary digital computerized morality?

The new Gommorah of today’s society produces no clear answers my friends. No definable data is produced for computation in this moral wasteland of individual mores.
The computer does not work.

It is difficult to understand and the simple and righteous people of this great land of ours cannot understand it because it makes no sense.

So, we are taking back our country, taking back our world and imposing sense. The old/new digital morality is coming, and all the liberals and godless heathens with their fuzzy logic have wrought it. They have wrought there very destruction because they have gone to far with their tolerance and ease.

The new digital morality is implaccable in its earnest simplicity and utilitarian nature. There is a steamroller coming brothers and sisters, and if you’re not riding it, you are in front of it.

But we’ll take you back. Climb up here into the driver’s seat with me, you’ll recognize the faces.

The great steamroller does not slow or stop. If you are not riding it, you are in the way. And, you know what that means.

Nope. Beg to differ, Scylla, but it seem sot me that the rise of fundamnetalism and rising obsession with tradition and nostalgia stems from a visceral reaction to the culture of change engendered by the whole of science and technology. It ain’t black and white, it’s increasingly gray, and that makes people uncomfortable. To fight back, some try desperately to force things into ones and zeroes.

And I think you’ll find that few people change their morality at will.

As I look about this tent and grounds at all you fine people I can’t help but feel this the finest revival we’ve ever had. I feel the spirit moving me Brothers and Sisters.

I’d like you all to welcome Brother andros. he is a fellow seeker along the path that has questions about our little congregation.

Brother andros has put forth the proposition that it is not the new Gomorrah with its wicked ways that moves us, but a “visceral” reaction to the onslaught of technology.

No.

Wait.

Brother’s and Sisters, my friends, I expect so much more from you. Do not boo him, do not revile or denounce him, for the path is not clear and well-marked for us all. Some need help to find it again, and some may stray while trying to stay on the straight and narrow.

I say to you that we are not here to revile him. Nay!
We are here to show him the error of his assertions so that he may regain the proper path.

When I hit the remote does not the TV turn on?
When I dial the number does not the call connect?
When I turn the key does not the engine start?

Brothers and Sisters;

What if only some TVs came on when you turned the remote?
What if you got somebody different on the phone every time you dialed the same number?
What if you turned your car key, and it toasted a bagel?

Don’t laugh my friend, I am serious.

If any of these things happened, what would you do?

Why, you’d conclude they were defective, wouldn’t you?

Technology works. It works within the role it was designed for. And, it is an either or proposition. It is a binary proposition. It is a digital proposition.

Technology, brother andros, confirms our worldview. It confirms the new/old digital morality. When we compare the wonders that be through the science of a digital and binary viewpoint, we know that that is the path we must choose. Is it not science a strict mistress?

Our greatest weakness is that the moral firmament of our great society lacks the sound foundation inherent in the simplest technological convenience. No wonder it doesn’t work.
