Dilbert dropped from 70 papers

Prince of Insufficient Illumination

That’s Pointy-Haired Boss. The pointy hair is meant to resemble the devil’s horns, just like Phil has.

Rather obviously the real-world implementation of the idea would be based on there being predictable timetables, rather than absolutely fixed 9-5, and having work-to-rule be the norm. The goal is to end the de-facto expectation of you having no life but the office, which the old good Dilberts touched upon often.

I think I’ve told this story before.

When I worked for a small division of a big company, we got a new general manager. One day, we are called into an all-hands meeting to meet the new GM. During his talk, he tells us that he’s been visiting our site for the last week and he notices that when he arrives at 8 AM, the parking lot is almost empty. This is unacceptable. He expects employees to start work at the official start of the workday, which is 8 AM.

Over the next day or so, multiple engineers told their bosses that if ordered, they were perfectly happy to start there day at 8 on the dot and they would leave work promptly at 5 PM. Since the usual work day at this site (for the engineers) was to show up at 9-10 AM and work into the late evening, the lost hours of actual work would be in the 100’s to 1000’s of hours a week.

Word filtered down that the GM was just offering an opinion and that no requirement for an 8 AM start should be expected…

I was reminded of Dilbert recently and wanted to see if the strip was still going. The answer is “sort of”.

If you go to the Dilbert website, there are no Dilbert strips, past or present. There is a message from Adams (I assume) in which he says he is “upgrading” past Dilbert strips to a “spicier version” which he has titled Dilbert Reborn. But you have to subscribe and pay to see these strips.

I’ll admit I’m curious. But not enough to pay Adams. What is his idea of making Dilbert “spicier”. Is he adding sexual content? Profanity? My suspicion is that the spice in question is racism, misogyny, and Trumperism.

Has anyone seen any of these recent strips?

The example I saw here made Millard Fillmore look witty

When I was in the 8th grade, we had a guy in art class who used to draw these hilarious cartoons. He was funnier than Adams’s reboot.

It’s clear Adams is attempting to take his revenge against the liberal conspiracy but it’s pretty lame. Actually the strip hasn’t been funny for years.

(a) That’s “Mallard Fillmore”, of course and thanks to the forty-six people who read the post and clicked the link but refrained from correcting me

(b) You can look at r/Dilbert subreddit and see more examples. They are uniformly lame.

Uniformly lame is a glowing review. Oof!

So are half the redditors on there who are sucking Adams’s dick.

r/dilbert has 9.5k members and it’s been a week since the last post.

r/calvinandhobbes has 706k users and around 10 posts in the last 24 hours.

I’m not going to link to it but Dilbert Hole was an unauthorized recaptioning of some of the strips in the late 90s. They’re easy to find on archive.org and, rereading now, my shoulders are shaking from suppressing laughter in the lunchroom at work. Very dirty, ages 18+! Fire extinguisher, lol.

I laughed more at those 17 strips than I did at the real Dilbert during the last 5 years that it was published.

I’m gonna add: Not Safe For Work.
