Dilbert (Jan 10, 2023)

Yeah, that post confused me too. It’s in no way any kind of counterexample.

No he wasn’t. He was starting to say, “All lives matter”.

Yeah, this cartoon is unambiguously attacking the left.

Thus showing you are the “Catbert”

He had already answsered the question “Do black lives matter?” with “Of course”

“All lives matter” was likely not going to be the full answer to the second question.

Chances are it would have been something like “all lives matter, including black ones. This is an obvious fact, there have been some problems with the BLM movement too though such as…”

In effect Catbert’s used there to project that rejecting the “ALL lives matter” argument is itself intolerance and that “talk more about how black lives matter” is some sort of trick to trip people over. Notice that the outburst comes immediately upon hearing the word “all”. Catbert’s being portrayed as an intolerant PC type who does not want to even hear the phrase never mind if there’s an elaboration.

Exactly. That cartoon definitely attacks some caricature of what Adams thinks a PC-type is. It definitely doesn’t attack the right or Republicans.

Sorry to be the Catbert here but, no, “All lives matter” was indeed the full answer. The answer implies that Black lives are no more at risk than non-black lives and it’s morally wrong to single black lives out in the context of police violence.

So, yes, I’m the Catbert except that I wouldn’t have asked about BLM in a job interview just to ID racists. I have been involved in hiring as a union panel rep and discussion of politics would not have occurred in an interview.

And even if there were an elaboration, leading with that, which everybody understands has the meaning indicated, renders everything after “matter” a rationalization.

The strip, though, portrays the person using the phrase as being the poor sincere victim of a hostile trap.

Oh, yeah, that, too. Contrary to what Adams or his compatriots apparently believe.

Perhaps you are not aware of what “All lives matter” means.

All Lives Matter is a slogan that is associated with opposition to and was created in response to the Black Lives Matter movement.[1][2][3] The slogan “argue[s] [that] all lives are equal because we are all human beings.”[4] The All Lives Matter slogan is typically associated with conservative views, and a rejection of the ideas supported by proponents of the Black Lives Matter movement, which emerged in response to police brutality and ethnic violence.[5]

I doubt Adam’s agrees with that meaning. The dig is at the “PC” (evil) cat.

The interviewee was going to go into the usual spiel how all lives matter (the typical right-wing and self-described centrist, missing-the-point explanation that Adams would be a fan of) and the evil HR rep cut him off and removed him from consideration.

How is this Adams beating on righties or Republicans?

So it’s about a 4chan catch phrase?

One down.

Actually, no other announcements yet, but from that notice it looks like several down:

We are part of Advance Local, and the leaders in all Advance Local newsrooms independently have made the same decision we did to stop running the strip. That includes newspapers in Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Alabama, Massachusetts and Oregon.

GoComics has dropped him. That is, Classic Dilbert was on their site yesterday and is missing today. It’s too bad – I read a bunch of comics there, including Classic Dilbert, and I was looking forward to not reading it going forward as the tiniest protest possible, but the woke mob made that decision for me! I can’t even boycott things before they are already canceled!

Anyway, I’m happy to see he’s getting some push back, but I’m sure he’ll end up on Fox News or something worse.

My local paper also announced today they dropped Dilbert specifically because of the video he posted.

Dropped by The Oregonian for pretty much the same reason. Comes with a good explanation of the difference between “cancelling” and editing.

And the Boston Globe. As well as the entire Gannett chain.

And the Washington Post. They apologized that some editions had already been printed before they could remove the strip. Sections in Sunday papers are often printed early in the week (like travel or entertainment or books), since they’re not time-sensitive. I expect to see it still in the Sunday paper.

The Spokesman Review (Spokane, WA) has also dropped Dilbert.
