Diners Drive in's and Dives Dislikes?

I was watching Guy Fieri (sp?) this afternoon on Diner’s Drive in’s and Dives and watched him eat probably the most odd and disgusting thing I could imagine. It occurred to me that I’ve never seen him eat anything that he disliked. Has anyone either watched an episode or seen an internet clip of anything that this guy wouldn’t eat?

I’m just curious, I can’t believe some of the things this guy eats and there’s gotta be some internet clip of this guy refusing to eat something disgusting, or spitting something nasty out.

I’d love to see it, so please let me know if there’s anything like this out there… This guy can’t possibly love everything, can he?

I’m sure the ones he doesn’t like don’t ever make it to air. The show’s about promoting these little dives, so he’s not going to knock on any. There’s probably plenty where they got maybe half the footage they usually would, but then Guy has a bite of a burger and goes “What is this crap? Pack it up, let’s roll out.” There might be some outtakes floating around, but I have no idea where to look.

I do give Fieri credit for one thing, though. He went to Chino Bandido here in Phoenix, a Chinese-Mexican-Caribbean fusion diner, which prompted me to try it myself. It’s easily one of the best little food joints I’ve ever been to. It’s low-key, the staff is friendly as anything, and the food is utterly fantastic. I’d eat there three times a week if I lived any closer and I had the budget for it.

If he’s like me, he’ll eat anything. So, don’t keep us in suspense, what was this odd and disgusting food? I have a feeling it’s going to be something not terribly odd, like pickled pigs feet or scrapple or something.

Fieri chooses what he asks the cooks to make for him to sample, so it seems likely that he’s either tasted the dishes beforehand and has pre-chosen what to feature in the cook-and-eat segment or that he’s choosing things that he knows, barring old grease on the griddle or burning, that he’ll like (or be able to fake liking) because the ingredients are all things he likes.

I saw him once take a bite of a regular run-of-the-mill cheeseburger…plus peanut butter. He didn’t like it at all and said so.

My dislike of the show is that he never seems to mention the name and location of the place he’s visiting after the intro. If I’m seeing him eat a super-greaseburger (and I have a weakness for super-greaseburgers) I may be interested in checking the place out. I need to know if it is in Massachusettes or Michigan.

Why can’t he even flash a card up at the end of the segment “Sammy’s Sliders, Gooseneck NJ?”

That’d be nice. It would be even nicer if the DDD website kept a directory of venues visited.

However, basic Google-fu will turn up a bazillion websites with the desired dirtectories, review recaps, and even recipes of the stuff Guy sampled on the show.

The last episode I saw was from my home town. It was a place called Joe Tess. They are famous for their fried carp. Yeah, fried carp. There is a pretty loyal client base, but I think it is about the nastiest thing I have ever been served in a restaurant. The place even smells awful. The owner gave Guy a sample of the pickled carp that Guy obviously did not like. Who would blame him. Pickled raw carp?

Yeah, I remember this episode also. I think it was a place called Triple X Root Beer in West Lafayette, Ind. IIRC the owner made it as kind of a joke, and I don’t think it was one of their regular menu items.
But at least he doesn’t feel the need to make orgasmic noises every time he takes a bite of something, like Rachel Ray.

I know I’ve heard it mentioned on several occasions that a place was recommended by a viewer. I don’t think they just pick places at random, they’re already a known factor.

I don’t think so… I think it was a standard menu item. There’s a restaurant in Toronto that serves burgers with any topping you can imagine too, and they have a peanut butter one as well. I’ve had a hamburger with peanut butter which wasn’t too bad, but I’m not sure I would like it with cheese…

The only thing about Gut Fieri I don’t like is that he claims to be from Pittsburgh but I’ve never heard him say “yinz”.

Yeah, but does he say “slippy” 'n’at?

Yeah, it was definitely a standard item, but the owner did come out and say some people love it, but a lot of people hate it. So it’s not like he was insulted when Guy didn’t like it. Which is probably why it made it on air.

I agree an official directory from Food Network would be beneficial in locating some of these places. There have been a few attempts at doing such a thing, but I question their completeness.

As for Guy not liking stuff, I do recall one episode where the owner made him eat some piece of pork (perhaps the ear?) and he reluctantly did so but kindly declined any more.

There was an episode where he tried menudo… I remember he really didn’t care for that…

I remember the menudo episode. The cook wasn’t surprised at Guy’s reaction.

I’ve seen him eat haggis but I don’t remember if he liked it. Or was it scrapple?

I hope not, he’s married and has a kid!

Oh, that menudo…

That would be the Duane Purvis burger, definitely a standard menu item (Triple XXX Family Restaurant Menu). I love 'em, personally, but haven’t had one in a decade or better.
