We’ve recently gotten a Starlink account so we can have internet out in the wilderness. The other day we got knocked offline and when we tried to reconnect, the only network to be found was “Stinky”. Turned out to be the right choice, but I’m pretty sure we aren’t the ones who named it that!
Does the link actually go to Snapchat? DON’T CLICK IT, just hover over it and read the address.
I’m assuming it doesn’t, which would likely mean you used DingusMcFathead as a throwaway name on some website in the past. Hackers stole the contact database from that site, and now scammers are sending fake password reset emails in an attempt to steal other info from you.
I’d go to Snapchat and go through the ‘forgot my password’ process. If the system sends DMcF a link to reset the password, you can be pretty sure it’s authentic.
I went to Snapchat.com (had to use Edge, they specifically say only Edge and Chrome are supported), and did the Forgot Password process. Got another password reset email that called me DingusMcFathead, so I guess that’s me!
Soooo, when are you going to request a name change here? DingusMcFathead is so much more interesting than your current undo name. This is coming from someone named wguy123. Maybe I should request that name change?
I’ll bet that’s what it is. Someone got a list of usernames and email addresses and probably sent that email out to everyone. There’s a good chance plenty of those people will have used that username for snapchat, even if the list came from somewhere unrelated.
Do you use plex? They had a security breach a week or two ago. I have no idea if plex has usernames as I’ve never used it, but apparently I have an account there since they sent me an email about it.
Another possibility is that someone else with equally good taste in usernames registered as DingusMcFathead and mistyped their email address, putting in yours instead. The next time they tried to log in and use the “forgot password” function, the reset email went to you.
wguy123, I’m happy with control-z, you can have DingusMcFathead if you like.
Joey_P, I tried Plex a long time ago but don’t have any login details written down. Could be related.
TroutMan, yes I guess that would be possible if Snapchat allows creating an account without verifying the email address. They shouldn’t, but maybe they did at one point.
