I learned in school that predators have eyes set in the front of their heads so they get the stereo vision they need to successfully hunt prey. Animals like deer, some birds, mice, and so on have eyes on the side of their head so they can see all around them and avoid predators trying to sneak up on them.
However, large predator dinosaurs like tyrannosaurus rex had eyes on the side of their heads!! Wouldn’t that be a big disadvantage for a predator? Did they bang into a lot of trees when lunging for cute little bunny-saurs?
Anyone have any ideas about this?
Tyrannosaurs are thought to have been ambush predators; that is they would have lurked in the bushes and pounced, rather than chasing down prey. There is much controversy about this and some say that they may have been scavengers.
Actually, T-rex’s snout was quite narrow and the eyes faced pretty much forward, giving good forward vision and even, I believe some binocular overlap.
And all that snout was full of olfactory sensors; what a sense of smell they must have had!
