Holy crap, I did a search on Liberal/Libertarian and he’s been pitted thirty-three times. And yes, I actually went through and made sure I was counting threads that referred to the poster and not just everything with the words liberal and libertarian in the title.

Diogenes comes in at a paltry twenty in comparison (one of those was started by Lib, btw). Trihs is a distant runner up at twelve.

For some definitions of “paltry”. Put it into a pit per year basis or a pit per posts basis or a pit per thread participation basis or a pit per apparent overall IQ basis and I highly suspect Dio is probably in a league all his own.

I’ve escaped the thrill of a pit. It’s not for lack of being unreasonable or posting while drunk. It’s not as easy as it seems to get a good multi-page pit thread going in your honor, especially when anybody defends you.

I did open one in response to a GD thread, but my point was about the haphazard unevenly enforced “don’t be a jerk” rule (which I loathe because it is haphazard, unevenly enforced, and… oh, don’t get me started)

Two things I would like to point out:
First as I mentioned in the other thread, You should not go around poking and taunting Mr. Murphy like this. He has the ability to get that one extra distraction going so that few second distraction turns into two hours.

One other thing, just because I can’t let go of the analogy with experts and checklists…

The most dangerous “experts” out there are those who think that they are so perfect that they don’t need checklists and procedures, whether we’re talking about surgeons, pilots, nuclear power plant operators–or automobile drivers.

I used to supervise the operation of a submarine and its nuclear power plant back when I was in the Navy. In my experience, the most dangerous sailors I knew were those who were positive that they could never make mistakes, and didn’t use the mandatory checklists and procedures.

Naval Reactors (who administers the annual Operation Reactor Safety Exam) knows this, too. In a simulated casualty drill, operators are expected to perform their immediate actions from memory. The next step is to pull out the procedure, even if one has done the procedure a thousand times. Failure to pull out the procedure is grounds for immediate failure of that drill, even if all of the actions performed are done correctly.

Anyway, Dio’s insistence that he could never forget a child in the back seat reminds me of those sailors who insisted that they could never forget a step in a procedure. Until they did. :rolleyes: Fortunately, the U.S. Navy has sufficient back-ups and fail-safes that nothing catastrophic ever happened.

Private pilots I know say that there are two kinds of pilots that fly retractable gear planes.

1. Those that have landed with the wheels up
   and
2. Those that will. :smack:

FTR I got to “fly” a real life commercial flight simulator (what they train airline pilots with.)
We were “flying” over Pearl Harbor and decided to go down and look closer at the Arizona Memorial. Guess what happens when you trim the plane for decent, reduce the power and head toward the deck?
At a particular altitude ,over the cockpit loudspeakers comes Bitching Betty saying "LANDING GEAR! LANDING GEAR! LANDING GEAR!
Gee, I wonder why that is? Why did the aircraft designers put that feature into the aircraft?
Could it be because people make mistakes when they don’t intend to?

I raised two absolutely wonderful children who are now adults. I never left them in the car, but I was always aware that it could happen, and I had a system so I would not.
I never did, I am sure I never would, but I freely admit that I could get distracted, so I always stayed vigilant.

Cite for what? That Dio generally has a liberal political viewpoint? I thought that was common knowledge. Or that I generally have a liberal political viewpoint, and that’s why I usually agree with his politics? I’m telling you that now.
