is it possible to move up, down, left and right in space. if so, where do all the planets lie? i thought they were in a mostly straight line, moving in an elliptical orbit around the Sun. do other objects in space lie above or below Earth? Have we thought to look there yet?
There was another thread recently on this subject - search for “planets”.
Anyway, planets are not lined up like they so often show on TV and in movies. They don’t all swing around the sun like a giant baseball bat. At any given time, you can have planets scattered all over around the sun.
However, the orbits are more or less in the same plane, called the ecliptic. Pluto’s is slightly inclined to the ecliptic, but it’s pretty close. The asteroids are generally close to the same plane as well.
Depending on how you look at it, I lie both above and below the earth, lay both above and below earth(when sleeping, sun bathing, or “doin’ the do”), and yes, you have looked there and “found” me, if the “we” you are talking includes the wild-eyed fundies.
Amen. Welcome to the boards.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAH
Out of curiosity, did anyone else think “The enemy’s gate is down” when they read the thread title, or am I just a total geek?
Sorry about the hijack, but I really don’t know the answer to the question.
Yes, I thought that exact thing. That book changed the way I think about many things.
How so?
