I’m getting tired of Comcast. They’ve been quietly raising their prices for some time now. Today I got my credit card bill, for the card that I only use for automated payments to Comcast. Over $194. :eek: I was ticked when it jumped to $173! I called them, and they charged me for a replacement remote control they said would be sent to me free of charge. They’re refunding the amount.
Last week we talked to a guy selling DirecTV. He said Comcast has good high-speed Internet, and we may as well stick with them for that. But DirecTV could give us everything Comcast does for $90/month – less than that with the one-year and two-year promotions. I mentioned this to ‘Pablo’ at Comcast when I was on the phone with them today, and they have a promotion where I can get everything I have now, including Internet, for $90/month for six months. After that, it goes to $110/month. Well, thanks for telling me! Why not let me know instead of silently raising my rate every few months?
Well, ‘Pablo’ said he’s made the change to the new, same-as-the-old, package. It’s cheaper than getting DirecTV plus Comcast Internet. But I’ve already listened to DirecTV’s spiel, and we often run into the problem where we have two shows recording and cannot watch another channel while they do. (The whole point of recording is so that we can watch later. We don’t want to watch one of the two shows right now!)
I love DirecTV. I switched from Cox Cable and wish I had done so years earlier. I can’t speak about Comcast but DirecTV is better than Cox in every respect which is not that difficult because Cox is literally the worst company that I have ever had the misfortune patronizing.
Cable companies still have that sense of entitlement back from the days when they were the only game in town and none of us had choices.
Comcast is horrible. The service stinks. I’ve had direct tv for years and find them to be much better, but neither of them are really affordable any more. It really irritates me that new customers get a better deal than a customer that has been with them for years.
That’s more about satellite technology than it is about DirecTV. Out here where there are very few big storms, satellite has way less downtime than the local cable.
Does DirectTV offer Internet? I used to have them, but switched to Comcast when I got Voice, TV and Internet bundled.
I loved DTV before I got really used to Comcast’s VOD and now, Xfinity (Comcast’s online, PC, mobile/app services). It does get a bit expensive though, but rarely any service issues.
In Memphis at least, Comcast seems to provide superior service. But DirecTV has much, much better commercials, both amusing and, in the last batch, featuring a hot, admirably bitchy mom.
I’m in your area, Johnny (Kent), and I wouldn’t hit a dog in the ass with Comcast. I had them for only a year and couldn’t believe how much they suck. Do yourself a favor and look into Dish network before you decide - best DVRs in the business!
Do NOT get DirectTV for internet. It works fine for TV, but if you have any other option for internet besides dial up, do it (DSL Cable). I have no other options, and while DirectTV (actually Hughes.net) works for basic stuff like emails, if you try to download anything or watch a couple of youtubes you will exceed your download limit real fast. If that happens, you get your connection throttled back to about 24K for 24 hours. Yes K.
Also, FYI, you really can’t play real time games with other people because of the latency - The additional time that your signal takes to bounce off the sat.
Cable is not reliable! When I had Cox it was down all the time! Much, much more than satellite! Thanks for your input though!
Out here you can bundle Verizon DSL with DirecTV. It’s not particularly fast though. I hope that we get FIOS out here one day but it will probably be years.
Customer service with Comcast has been satisfactory. (For CS, I tend to use a binary rating.) There are two things I don’t like: That one can only record two shows at a a time, and if you’re watching TV you have to watch one of them; and the biggie, they keep raising their prices without notice and the prices have about doubled over the last five or six years.
As for Internet access, the DirecTV guy said I should stay with Comcast for that. He said ‘they do Internet really well’. Since I work from home 3/5 (or more) of the time, I must have fast, reliable access. (My home connection is at least twice as fast as the connection at the office.)
We occasionally use VOD, mostly for catching up. Normally we catch up by simply recording the shows on the DVR and watching them when we can. We have caught a couple/few movies on HBO on Demand, but since there is a channel for that (as opposed to the Comcast On Demand) I assume we can still to that. The new TV is Internet-ready, so we’re going to subscribe to Netflix after the holidays. (There’s a Netflix button on the remote control.)
Hm. I pretty sure that I can only record two and I just got a new DVR last year when I upgraded to an HD TV. I just took a look and there are only two satellite cables (coax?) going into my DVR/satellite box and only two available inputs on the box.
Maybe this is an optional upgrade or it’s not available in my area.
We have one TV connected to cable. The SO’s room has her TV and DVD player, and the ‘Little Bedroom’ has my old 20" CRT and my first DVD player. I’ll probably put the 26" LCD TV into my room eventually. But right now, the limitation of only being able to simultaneously play back four shows does not apply here. The issue we’ve been having is that all of our favourite shows air on Sunday nights, and there are conflicts.
