Disco group with countertenor in the 80s?

I remember in the late 80s - early 90s we had a neighbor who loved this disco group whose singer was really amazing. He sounded like a classically trained countertenor and he had a very clear, high, piercing, pure voice. Does anyone know who they were?

I’m assuming you’ve ruled out the first name that comes to mind when someone mentions a disco singer with a clear, high, piercing voice – Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees?

Jimmy Sommerville?

Not really disco, but could it be Klaus Nomi?

Must be. The group was the Bronski Beat before he went solo.

Right, it was the Bronski Beat and Jimmy Sommerville. Thanks!! :))

I immediately thought of Mr. Sommerville. “Smalltown Boy” is both an epic song and fantastic social commentary. Still get a little weepy when I see the video.

I think the Bronski Beat stuff has aged really well. It’s 80s disco pop, but not embarrassing.

I do love his voice.

Sommerville also fronted The Communards after he left Bronski Beat. They had some good disco covers.
