Recently, the Discovery Channel aired “Who killed Julius Caesar?” a companion of sorts to its earlier “Assassination of King Tut”. I watched both shows, and thought the Tutankhamun one was especially good. By examining his mummified remains and what little historical evidence is left behind, detectives whittled down the list of suspects to the most likely: Ay, Tut’s grandfather and successor.
The Caesar one I felt suffered due to a lack of a corpse. The supposition there is that Caesar more or less committed suicide by ignoring warnings of a plot on his life.
Both were interesting shows that I enjoyed – at the very least, they relieved the steady diet of World War II that the History Channel insists on cramming down my throat. I wonder if this will become a regular series? There are enough historical figures with ambiguous deaths (Attila the Hun and Amelia Earheart come to mind) to provide future fodder.
