Discussion of Ali being racist [mod title]

Yeah, I think that dissecting his brain and confirming a CTE diagnosis could be the best thing that ever happened about the condition.

I agree that forbidding or even expressing displeasure at the prospect of someone marrying an Italian (or Jew or Muslim or Asian or whatever) would make someone a bigot. I don’t believe however that someone casting a wide net and discouraging a relative or anyone else from marrying anyone outside their culture is necessarily a bigot. In your scenario of the Native American marrying outside their culture, the result will be that in just a few generations the descendants will have only 1/8 or 1/16 or 1/32 Native American blood and will very likely no longer have much if any interest in observing the traditions and customs of the Native American culture. And of course to the extent that happens the culture disappears. This is why objections might arise, and not because the proponent thinks other cultures are bad or inferior or beneath them. They simply don’t want the culture they’re proud of and identify with to disappear.

This doesn’t mean that laws and practices should be established to prevent someone from marrying outside their culture if they want to, and hatred and aggression should not be employed to keep people from marrying whoever they want. But as for someone encouraging other members of their race or culture to stay true to that race or culture, I feel about it like I do any other opinion: they’re entitled to have theirs and it doesn’t make them a bad person unless and until they begin to employ hatred or force or violence in an effort to make theirs the prevailing opinion. And as far as I know Muhammed Ali never did either.

Ali endorsed Reagan for President because he thought Reagan was going to keep religion in the schools. I would have thought that would ruin his popularity on the Dope if anything could.

Yet another thing you’re wrong about.

You seem to have this weird idea about the people that populate this message board and their supposed lack of tolerance for other ideas which, if true, could hardly explain how the hell you(and all the other right wing “martyrs”) have lasted so long here.

Right, right - the Dope is known for its broad-minded tolerance.

Assholes actually serve a useful purpose. This guy is a cyst upon a tapeworm coiled inside an asshole.

In hell…

Yet you’re here all day every day.

There’s a difference between tolerating people and tolerating ideas. Right wing ‘martyrs’ are tolerated here. Their ideas? Hah!

IT’s the entire HBO hour and a half “Thrilla in Manilla” documentary, folks.

The lack of humanity in which Ali expressed on his own race, in particular Joe Frazier, is hardly “heroic”. Berating Frazier with taunts of “gorilla” and “Uncle Tom” with rapacious regularity, Ali only cared for himself, not his self-appointed “people”. Such bigotry is normally found in people who lack intelligence, which Ali’s 376th out of 391 ranking in high school; and 78 IQ clearly represent.

If you wish to praise someone for being a class individual, you should look no further than Joe Frazier.

The guy literally told the KKK that he agreed with them!

I think an IQ under 80 is required for membership in the KKK, so Ali was welcome with open arms.

So again, you are just saying stuff with no actual proof.

I’ll make it easier for those of you who were too lazy. Those of you who actually did the work are better off for it.

The younger Muhammad Ali may have been kind of a jerk. That doesn’t mean that the older man, with a very, very different outlook and attitude, was.

That’s a fair and logical statement, although you are being far too kind by referring to Ali as merely “kind of a jerk”. A more logical description: Dim-witted racist.

I’ll respond to your logical premise, with a logical rebuttal.

• Ali wasn’t some kid while he was frolicking as a racist. He was a grown man in his 30s.

• Ali is widely regarded as a hero for his statements and actions during the same time frame of his public bigotry. In the coming days, we are going to be inundated with tributes and praises (the President spoke of Ali’s greatness). Hence the importance of exposing him as the bigot that he was.

• Ali never disavowed his past actions and beliefs later in life. Even Robert Byrd, the former president of the senate and member of the KKK, spent the rest of his life disavowing his past bigotry. No such thing was ever done by Ali.

Ali is the dim-witted racist that people have forever given a pass too. Why? Because he was a great athlete. How shallow!

I hope the man finds peace in the afterlife. I hope he dies as peacefully as someone in his position could, with family and friends supporting him by his side. But we cannot let a racist be decorated a hero.

An IQ of 78 is only 8 points above the cut off for mental retardation. All one has to do is listen to Ali speak to be confident of the irrelevancy of any IQ test with such numbers.

Who is “we” Kemosabe?

I can be critical of what he did early in his life but it is really stupid to willfully ignore what he did later. You are still willfully ignoring what happened later in his life and indeed the last reports showed that Ali did die peacefully and with family and friends by his side and others supporting him. Friends like George Foreman.

How about you put your money where your mouth is: post your IQ. Or else STFU.
