Because of his illness, and just because he’s getting older, Terry’s slowed down his productivity somewhat. He used to release two new books per year (though the second book was often much shorter, like the Bromeliad or Johnny Maxwell books) and then that slowed down to 1.5 a year. Now it’s just one per annum, and who knows, he may even slow down again, depending on how he chooses to manage his early-onset alzheimers.
As an aside, does anyone know if Corgi has published Making Money as a paperback yet, or are they planning to do it at all? I have all the other books in the series as paperbacks and the large hardcover edition won’t fit into my bookshelf… I’ve been holding out buying it until then.
Edit: found it on Amazon.uk, it’s coming out in June. Good grief. The others came out as paperbacks much quicker.
In Making Money, Pterry taught us a lot more about practical economics than you would expect of a fantasy-humor novel – but he never addressed in any way the problems of the money supply and inflation. Moist von Lipwig, as president of the Royal Bank and Royal Mint, has devised a system by which he can print and distribute as much money as he wants, with no controls. It seems never to have occurred to him that the more dollars there are in circulation, the lower is the purchasing power of each one. (Which would displease the Patrician sooner or later.) And it makes no difference, in that regard, whether the currency is backed by gold or golems.
No, I mean, it never seems to have occurred to Moist that he should think about limiting the money supply or why. He’s given no hint at any point that he understands what inflation is, and for that matter neither has the Patrician. Neither seems to have thought about the problem at all. Both of them will be equally surprised when it happens.
Well, it should take more than a little while for paper money to completely supplant gold and silver. Then you have the growing economy of A-M, and the new public works projects envisioned by the Patrician. Inflation shouldn’t be a problem for the next few books at least. But Pterry might make a bit of a mention about it in the next book. You never can tell.
