Discworld reading club 1: The Colour of Magic

Well, he quits in reaction to having to take the lives of his daughter and son-in-law. “Grief” is probably the closest human analogue to whatever he was feeling.

Actually, I wouldn’t like to brag about the job i had got because the contract hasn’t been signed yet. I also haven’t read the book yet. It was on my to-read list for about three years and now I finally got the incentive to read it. At the moment I’m almost halfway through it. Let’s just say that involves the seats of rulers and an albino wolf.

I did something that Master didn’t approve of and Hugo Rune didn’t teach me enough Dimac to be able to save the little bugger.

I didn’t love SG until my second time through. After the first read, it was one of my least favorite Diskworld books. Now it might be my favorite.

I rather like this book despite its flaws as mentioned above. I think the unredeeming aspects of Rincewind and Death helps to set the stage. We are shown quite how nasty people or incarnations are, and then in the later books we see them develop. It also helps make the seediness and dangerousness of Ankh Morpork more real and not just a hyperbole. It makes what happens in later books more real. I can well imagine Vime being ground into the cynical copper that we first see him as by the meaness of it all, not so much the city as it is in the Truth.

I finished rereading. I noticed this time through what was “wrong” with the book, but the first time through, it was my introduction to Pratchett and I was thrilled. Until the end.

What a fast read. I didn’t even find the book until 10:30 last night. Read a little, bed, work, read to end. I’m glad the future books aren’t that blasted short.

What’s the next book and the eta for its thread? I’m behind! Helllp!

Next book is The Light Fantastic. I was about to bump the thread myself to see when the next one was starting so I’ve got no clue on that part…

Sorry for the bump.

I just finished re-reading this book, thought of a question and did a search in CS to see if it had been addressed. Imagine my surprise at discovering a not-too-old thread devoted to exactly this volume!

So here’s my question: has it ever been established exactly where/how Twoflower got the luggage? I’ve read all the DW books, but can’t recall this being explained. Have I just forgotten it, or is it one of life’s great mysteries?

Thanks!

It seems pretty clear that Twoflower got the Luggage before he started his vacation.
IIRC, in The Light Fantastic, Twoflow mentions that he got the Luggage from a magical shop – one of those that disappears as soon as you step out of the door.

On the other hand, in Interesting Times, there are brief mentions of stalls of sapient pearwood luggage in the Agatean Empire, for the owners to “park” their stuff when they enter a building. Given that nobody acts particularly surprised at the Luggage in the Empire, it seems to me that it’s the Agatean equivalent of a high-end set of Samsonite – nice to have, but nothing particularly mind-boggling.
Ah, the bit from Light Fantastic seems familiar. I guess I’ll find out soon enough, I plan to launch right into it!

Thanks!
