So these days I mostly drink flavored seltzer, with the big brand up here being Polar. I like tart, slightly dry flavors in such things; sweet berry and the like don’t really do it for me. I discovered a Granny Smith Apple flavor, which is pretty good - sour apple with just a hint of weird snow-cone aftertaste.
Unfortunately, the label (among about two dozen flavor/color combinations) is a light apple green, as is… Vanilla Pear [I was going to put in a sample image, but even on their website, the flavor only exists as a special edition from a couple of years ago, and looks completely different]. In a hurry, I grabbed three of the latter. They’re almost indistinguishable if you don’t look closely at the name and notice that it’s a cut pear instead of an apple and that there’s a sprig of vanilla flowers behind the pear.
So I open one and start sipping. Whoa. Weird. Then it hit me… the pear flavor isn’t bad, like a slightly sweeter version of the apple. But the odor - the perfume - the scent of vanilla is overpowering. You can barely taste it, but sitting open it can stink up the room… and while I like vanilla in its place, it’s not a candle or room-freshener scent I can stand.
What disgusting flavor combos have you run across, accidentally or deliberately?
