Disposable Diapers - Your Favorites

Thanks for all the advice and kind words!

Are the Luvs and Pampers really perfumed? That’s terrible!

I guess I’ll just try out different brands to see which fits the BeanSprout’s butt geometry (heh) the best. I’m really glad to hear that the cheaper brands can be very good. I’ll definitely try them.

beagledave–We will definitely be getting a Diaper Champ. It’s gotten rave reviews everywhere, especially when compared to the Diaper Genie. Damn, those refills are expensive! I was initially reluctant to get a specialty diaper pail, but almost everybody says they are really worth it.

From what I can tell, some brands just fit certain bodies better. The way Cranky Jr is put together, Huggies were the best for him, but I know people who said Huggies leaked on their kids, so they were Pampers fans. You may not want to buy too many diapers in advance until you know what fits your kid best.

After using Huggies for so long, we were addicted to the cloth-like cover and the velcro, so I only used cheaper brands that had those features. Target’s “Loving Touch” brand is a lot like Huggies. And a good buy. Wal-mart sells White Cloud diapers and they are also like Huggies. They’re fantastic; we just don’t live close to a Wal-mart. Some major drugstore chains also have some good Huggies knock-offs, but in general I’ve found that there are more varieties of cheap diapers that have tape and/or plasticy outer covers. You’d be doing yourself a favor if you taught yourself to like the ones with tape.

I don’t want to chastise you–I’m obviously going to use disposables myself. But I wouldn’t mind some discussion of the issue. So I took you up on your offer–I started a thread in GD called Cloth vs. Disposable Diapers.

I’d really like to echo the suggestion to NOT stock up on a buttload of diapers prior to birth. Not only do you not know your baby’s “butt topography”…but you don’t know its size either. If you load up on newborn diapers, and have a larger baby, the tyke either will already be too big, or will grow out of that size before you run out.

Instead, if you’re going to use wipes…load up on those. (We like the Target brand)

Trust me…one of you will be leaving the house in the first few days after the birth anyway…might as well use that opportunity to pick up some diapers then.

I forgot to mention…we use Glad tall kitchen bags that have some sort of “odor guard” thingie in our Diaper Champ…we rarely can smell the diapers.

I wouldn’t recommend loading up on wipes either because babies can develop allergies to them too. Both of my neices were allergic to pampers wipes and my cousins baby was allergic to huggies wipes.

As for diapers, I used Pampers on my daughter for the first 6 months and then switched to Luvs. I’ve tried the Dri Bottoms and Fitti and Huggies but they leaked all the time so I just stuck to Luvs. I also use Pampers wipes with aloe and for the first 5-6 months I used a diaper genie. That thing was wonderful!! Push your diapers into the bag and give it a twist and POOF! No more smell.

One little tip: diaper wipes are great for cleaning the bathroom. You can wash the mirror, the counter, the sink, the top of the toilet, etc. Gives them a nice shine!

When my son came home from Korea three years ago my friends threw a diaper shower…so we tried all kinds - from the “green” kind you buy at the co-op to Pampers. He was allergic to Pampers at that time…we settled on Huggies.

I’ve used the Target store brand when feeling broke, but perfer the mid-priced Huggies - not the top of the line with the stretchy sides (although my husband likes those). The best diaper for my daughter has been the top of the line Pampers with the stretchy sides - she is a "sturdy " girl and the stretchy sides kept her in size four an extra three months! (The Huggies are too “droopy” in the butt for her). We put the kids in Pampers overnight diapers at night.

My daughter wears Huggies pull ups - she responds to the Disney characters and the “disappear when they get wet” bows. My son wore the Target pull ups - they fit his little butt better, and he never really got the “disappear” thing.

Pull ups are a waste if they aren’t toilet training - unless they aren’t toilet training but are changing their own diaper. My son did that for months - could change his own pull up just fine.

This seems an appropriate place to say - MY SON TOILET TRAINED TRAINED RECENTLY!!!

My kid’s been out of diapers for a couple of years now (yay!) but when she was wearing them, I liked the Target brand a lot. Drypers were good, too. However, YMMV. When Kid was born, MIL bought me a huge package of Walgreen’s diapers. When they finally fit the kid, I used them and inadvertantly introduced her to the world of diaper rash. Ouch :(. I wouldn’t load up on diapers right away, either, 'cause you never know. Start with the cheap brands and work your way up till you find one that works.

I noticed that the few times I bought Huggies, there would always be one “defective” diaper with a tab missing in each bag or box. Never had that happen with other brands. Very strange.

I used an old five gallon bucket with a lid for a diaper pail. Couldn’t smell anything with the lid on, and I regularly sprayed the thing with Lysol. When Kid was fully potty trained, I threw the thing away with no regrets–it was free in the first place.

I know it’s off topic, but…
What store carries Best Choice diapers?

FWIW, my day care providers thanked me once for Josie’s Pampers, saying that every other diaper had frequent blowout or leak problems. We’ve rarely dealt with those.

I use Pampers Cruisers for my 2.5 year old son. I hated the Pampers Baby Dry, and Huggies leaked on him. Only tried “cheap” diapers once. As in, bought a pack, used one, and threw the rest out.

Holy cow, this is an old thread! The kid I was posting about is now 14 years old!

So what kind of diapers does he wear now?

Heh, I didn’t see the dates as I was reading through. Everybody: if you sign up for repeating shipments via Amazon Mom, you get a huge discount on diapers AND you get up to a year of Amazon Prime for free. Think of all the trips to the store you WON’T have to pack the baby up for…

Yup, we use the target brand too. They work every bit as good as huggies and are much more affordable. Give them a try if you have a target handy.

I was so confused by the specific and repeated endorsement of “the velcro tabs” early in the thread. I was all head scratchy - like, do they even *make *sticky tab diapers any more?

We’re long out of diapers, but Kirkland, the brand from Costco, was my favorite. Worked just as well as Pampers and Huggies but cost a lot less.

Huggies Natural wipes all the way, though. Never found a store brand I liked as much. I still keep them around for cleaning, even though the youngest is now 6.

Depends. (Oh man, if she ever finds this, she’s gonna kill me!)

Ooh, zombie diapers!

I wonder whether cheap diaper technology has just vastly improved in the last nine years or something. We’ve never had a single leak or blowout with a disposable, and we’ve never bought any but the very cheapest ones I can find (though we did get sent home from the hospital with a box of the incredibly expensive “wetness indicator” Pampers). I prefer Target brand only because of the store brands available to us, they’re the only ones without cartoon characters printed on the front (they have nice blue and green polkadots instead).

[We did use cloth for four or five months, but they DID leak and blow out. A lot. Pretty much every time, actually, by the time we stopped, with all the brands we tried, though the el-cheapo knockoffs from Hong Kong were the worst. Also our washing machine is breaking down – we had to run diapers through three times to get them unstinked – and there’s no diaper service here. No, I’m not defensive about it at all! Why do you ask?]

I’m also a bit perplexed about why anyone thinks they need a Diaper Genie or equivalent. I have a very very very sensitive nose, and we’ve never had a stink issue, despite only taking the unsealed diaper trash out every three or four days. None of this individual mummification stuff. We might stick a really nasty poopy one in its own plastic grocery bag if we’ve just taken out the trash and know it’s going to sit there a while. And yes, our kid is already eating plenty of solid foods; he’s almost nine months old.

My favorite disposable diaper would be any one I do not see laying on the ground or parking lot.

If I ever catch someone improperly disposing of a soiled diaper, I swear, I am going to make them EAT IT.

and no jury will convict me!

I think you’re just lucky…from what I’ve heard from friends and relatives with babies, big blowouts still happen. Some babies have more than others. I think it’s less likely when they are older as it gets more solid.

It’s one of those “manufactured need” products which, like many others*, actually causes the problem it’s meant to prevent. I used one with my son because I was 18 and stupid, and the thing actually reeked, because it took over a week to fill up. The poop filled sausage smells like poop, only poop scented with floral baby powder scented perfume.

Older and wiser with my second child, I used a different system. The older child took out the plastic grocery bag of his sister’s diapers every evening and tossed it in the outside trash.

*Didja ever really have a problem with white residue from your deodorant until they started marketing “clear” deodorant? Me neither. But now I do, 'cause it’s almost impossible to find non-“clear” deodorants, and the clear ones leave white marks. :smack:
