Distributorless ignition on 2001 Silverado

Needless to say, I had (from what I understand), a typical experience for a full size GM truck owner with the 4.3 liter V6. Apparently unless you spend $3 at Home Depot on zip ties and pipe insulation, and 5 minutes putting it on the air conditioning line, it will eventually drip on the distributor.

After getting recommendations from several co-workers, I replaced the fuel filter over lunch (they said my description sounded like it was clogged). I guess that’s not relavant.

I had to get it towed to the garage and they told me what the rotor was fouled. Fortunaley they’re covering it under the recently expired factory warranty. However, in an effort to avoid this problem in the future (the pipe insulation doesn’t seem to me to be a long term solution), I want to convert the system to a distributorless igintion (assuming I can mount it somewhere else). Obviously this would have wire lenght considerations, etc but I can work around those.

My questions are:

  1. Can it be done (I believe it can but I’m not sure)
  2. If so, where do I find parts for some like that (google was less than helpful)

All the distributorless ignitions systems that I’m aware of are factory designed and deeply integrated with the electronic control system. The selection of particular sensors and the programming of the ECU (“computer”) are coordinated to the distributorless design. I question whether a conversion is possible, and I very seriously doubt that it can be done satisfactorily (i.e., without causing more–and worse–problems than it solves).

Insulating the pipe is a long-term solution, if the insulation is securely installed.
