Dixie Chicks are now the Chicks

At first glance, I scanned that as Robot E. Lee Ferguson :man_facepalming:. Nevermind .

Arguably, the most well known use of ‘Dixie’ is the blackface minstrelsy.song. Call it virtue-signalling, but I can understand wanting to end even the appearance of an association to Dixieland. It’s also a virtual synonym for the Confederacy, and for the South in general too. Dumb idea for a band name in the first place.

Thank the heavens Dixie Carter isn’t around to see this.

A character for which Dr. Asimov somehow never quite found a place in his considerable volume of writings.

Shhh! Don’t say

Oops.
Got it blurred.

A friend from work sent me a link to their (new, I guess?) song March March. Good jam, actually. I didn’t even realize The Chicks is them at first, but after the Lady A flap, I caught on (cuz I’m sharp like that).
Seems like a good thing to me. I have no idea what they’ve said in the press or anything, but how can trying to be part of the solution be a bad thing?

After that, Georgia Pacific will sell the brand to Victoria’s Secret.

Yeah, this is the dumb part of this. “Dixie Chicks” at least had alliteration going for it; “The Chicks” sounds like a naive garage band.

Also, they missed an opportunity to go full-on troll and rebrand themselves “Northern Aggression”.

I just heard that song myself. It is really good.

The only redeeming feature of the “rename to show your purity” wave is that it’s hilarious to watch from the sidelines.

I’m pretty sure calling women “Chicks” is sexist. I eagerly look forward to the next name alteration to pander to the Offenderati. I guess they’ll be just “The”.

Personally, I prefer Jewel Staite but maybe that’s just me…

The The is already taken.

I’m frankly astounded that they are woke enough to see the problem with “Dixie”, but not “Chicks”. Does not compute.

They could use some variant of the Union battle flag in all their cover art and stage themes.

The™ is a trademark of The Ohio State University™. Go Buckeyes!

Nope, it was denied.

You… do realize they are women, right? Is this like complaining that black people can use the N word? Like are people going up to the former members of N.W.A telling them how problematic their name is?

Of all the racist, oppressive, nasty things in this country that need to go, I personally don’t think the term “Dixie” is one of them.

But it’s their band, not mine. They can name it whatever they want for whatever reasons they want. I’m sure they didn’t make this decision on a whim.

I’d rather they go a little overboard trying to be thoughtful and compassionate, than go overboard trying to offend people like their political opponents do.

and who can forget Dixie Normous from Austin Powers 3

That’s exactly what my mom said. Even when she sorta kinda understood why Dixie might be racist, she jumped right into telling me that a lot of people are going to consider Chicks to be sexist. She seemed to be missing the point that they’re the chicks and they’re calling themselves chicks and if it’s derogatory, they’re choosing to using the term against themselves. It’s not an issue.

ISTM that’s a good example of a whataboutism.
