Dixie Chicks are now the Chicks

Makes sense because the 2 sisters were born in Mass. and Penn. Lead singer born in Texas which some people call the Southwest . They did join the confderacy.

So, I’m neither conservative nor a fan, but… is this an example of virtue signalling?

"We’re not going to use the word in our name with racist connotations anymore! From now on, we’re only using the sexist word as the name of our band!’

Good news is Dixie State in Utah changing their name. Bad news is the new name is Polygamy State. :joy:

After the W crack in the 2000s, I didn’t think they had any conservative fans anymore. The question is if conservatives who weren’t fans of the Chicks call this virtue signaling, would that itself be virtue signaling (to other conservatives)?

Many people agree with them that the 2nd Iraq war was not the best idea. Including Mr. Orange.

The reason they were canceled, though, was because they insulted our President overseas.

Their album that came out after they went after Bush sold well and went to #1 first week it came out. They picked up a lot of liberal fans too. They have a new album out next month. They also had a song “Not ready to make nice” after the Bush comments and that went to #4. Their concert tickets still sell well. Talk about them being cancelled is overblown.

Mel Gibson was pretty successful after he was persona non grata for drunken comments as well - doesn’t mean people don’t speak of him being canceled. Kevin Hart was supposedly canceled as well. He’s still successful. There was a concerted attempt to end their career - thousands of country music stations banned their music, they were not invited to the 2003 ACM awards, even though they won 3 Grammys for Home. Not Ready to Make Nice barely got played on US country radio. Just because they fought through it doesn’t mean there wasn’t an attempt to cancel them.

I never really got into the DC for whatever reason, but one of our bandmates recently suggested we cover this tune - which seriously rocks iMO. (Tho a cover of a Tim O’Brien tune.)

From Wikipedia:

After a hiatus, they toured again in 2010, 2013 and 2016.

The Chicks have won 13 Grammy Awards, including five in 2007 for Taking the Long Way —which received the Grammy Award for Album of the Year—and its single “Not Ready to Make Nice”. By March 2020, with 33 million certified albums sold,[1] and sales of 27.5 million albums in the U.S. alone, they became the bestselling female band and bestselling country group in the U.S. during the Nielsen SoundScan era (1991–present).

Yeah; I think they weathered that W storm just fine.

God this is so stupid.

These are very strange and troubling times. Some people are going to go overboard in their attempts to not offend. I’ve got no real problem with that. Things will settle down.

I have a sister named ‘Dixie’
I don’t think she’ll be dropping her name any time soon.

I still have a sleeve of Dixie Cups in the cupboard left over from camping last year.

I’m I an unredeemable racist?

Eh, give it a couple weeks.

Actually, what will probably happen is in a couple weeks Georgia-Pacific will make an announcement, and you will then be in possession of “D Cups”. I suspect you will be okay after that, unless you continue to refer to them as Dixie Cups, in which case you probably will be considered an irredeemable racist.

Don’t use cups; use bottles. They are redeemable.

That reminds me–I need to go to Winn to pick up some Cups and some Crystals. I’m having a Land party.

I knew a girl named “Gay”. She changed her name a couple of decades ago.

The valedictorian of my graduating class was named Robt. E. Lee Ferguson. African American who is now a Doctor.
I, always, from a very young age knew that must’ve hard for him.
