DMSO and arthritis

Does DMSO actually help arthritis. If so, why isn’t it prescribed for people. If not, why is it prescribed for animals?

I ran into a woman today who claimed that they wouldnt prescribe it for people because drug companies couldn’t patent it. She said that she got DMSO from the farm supply store and it worked wonders. I think I’ve heard of DMSO for arthritis, but in the lab, we treat it as really nasty because it will take stuff through your skin.

DMSO? Haven’t heard of it since the feed store downtown went out of business.

Note that it was a feed store and I live in suburban Chicago. As in: It’s been a while. DMSO does little on its own, but it carries medicine through the skin. Blows the shit out of measured dosing, but IIRC it was intended by some CIA/Mafia assassins to carry the poison smeared in Castro’s wet suit. Dosing, beyond “enough,” was not a priority.

No, it doesn’t work, it isn’t safe, and nobody has mentioned it for 30 years.

It’s only been fifteen.

It may have no clinical applications, but it’s extremely useful in research. It’s often used as a “universal” solvent. If a compound isn’t soluble in DMSO it’s pretty much a dead end.

I realize no one asked, but it is true.

DMSO has been controversial for a long time. Many still use it and swear by it.
In the USA it does have approved clinical use for interstitial cystitis. It is very effective for that disease. People expected DMSO to solve all the world’s problems and no one drug can do all that.

It does seem to be approved in other cow tries, but so was Thalidomide. Aside from carrying things through your skin, are there other hazards?

According to quack watch, it can have an analgesic effect, but will do nothing for the underlying inflammation. I wish I could find some real documentation on that though.

I recall a segment on 60 Minutes about it; one of the proponents was June Jones, who, at the time, was a quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons. As he last played in the NFL in 1981, that segment was aired 30 or more years ago.
