Do they? Even the ones in depanneurs (uh… 7/11s to the Americans)? A friend of mine was mugged, and after he revealed his PIN at knifepoint, one of the little fuckers went to take out money while the rest of them beat my friend up (while, by the by, passers by went on their merry way. How beautiful). I know we can find out where he took the money out (all 10 or so dollars that were in the account- suckers) throught the bank, but will we be able to get a pic? How often are security tapes recorded over?
Have you looked at the ATM? On most of the ones I use, the camera is quite conspicuous.
No, not all ATMs have cameras. I’ve even known some that had fake (non-functioning) cameras as a deterent. The only way to be sure is to contact the bank.
As for taping over the recordings, that is a matter of individual bank policy. It varies widely.
Of course, you probably have realized that the bank will not release the tape to a citizen, even the victim of the mugging. They are only likely to give the tape to the police. Your friend just needs to report the robbery, and the cops will take care of finding the tape.
Covenience or variety store. That’s what people call depanneurs in the rest of Canada, and I assume the states too. One of the first things I learned when I moved here for school!
Me: so, where’s the nearest depanneur?
Housemate: The nearest WHAT?
Me: you know, depanneur…food store place thingy for emergencies and stuff…?
Sorry about your friend. Notify the police, and the bank, and make sure he gets a new card with a new PIN.
Nobody’s likely to give you and your buddy pictures whether there was a camera or not. This is (or should be)a police investigation, and they should collect the evidence to establish a chain of custody. You should suggest this to the investigating officer, and only try to collect your own evidence if the police refuse to (maybe they’ll claim to be too busy or something).
In some states, yes, all ATMs are required to have a security camera. I believe NY is one of them.
Hail Ants is correct, at least in NYC. By the way, NYC has very stringent regulations relating to surveillance on ATMs. Each ATM much have its picture taken no less than once every 15 seconds, and there are standards for lighting, etc.
Oh, and I work for a company that resells ATMs. So models have places to mount surveillance cameras, but some have absolutely no place to stick the camera. Those models are intended to be placed where a building’s surveillance cameras can monitor it from the outside.
I know for a fact that some people who deploy ATMs in retail stores choose not to secure them with cameras, for whatever reason. Most likely cost cutting.
One time someone I knew stole my ATM card and took money. The police said they wouldn’t do anything without proof, and the bank told me that they would not provide the video to the police.
Moderators: May I ask Chula which bank that was? (I don’t want trouble with libel rules and all that.) I wouldn’t want to use a bank that would not assist in the apprehension of criminals.
It’s not libel if it’s true. Anyway, I don’t think they’re found in your part of the country. In California, there are basically two banks, BofA and Wells Fargo, and from all report they’re both awful. Mine was Wells Fargo.
They also refused to reimburse the money, despite their written policy that you are not libel if money stolen with your ATM card if you report the theft right away (which I did). They kept giving me the run around, and after a year of pestering them, I finally got the money. I never got to press charges though.
