Do any of you all have cool jobs?

Aerospace Structural Engineer in the employ of the Department of the Navy… I’m one of the folks who is trying to keep P-3s flying until the replacement aircraft comes on line (in 9-10 years, I’m hearing now) We are spending most of our time trying to develop repairs for parts that weren’t designed to be in service this long. We also design structural and electronic upgrades as required by the Navy, NOAA, Customs, several foreign militaries, and whoever else flies the venerable old Orions. I’ve been forced into the dubious role of landing gear expert… I’d much prefer doing structural design as I used to years back, but things change and I’m enough of a peon that I just do what I’m told…

9 years to retirement, but who’s counting…

FairyChatMom…TELL ME, the navy doesnt use firestone tires on those landing gears?!
hahaha

I see a lot of naked young women in my practice, and it’s not really exciting either. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy women, I’ve even lusted (in my heart) after an attractive woman, only to see her as a patient, and lose all that lust immediately. Just as well, I guess. Sex with patients would be really creepy.

Qadgop, I saw your post earlier and it made me realize Ive never been that excited about seeing naked sick women (although I’m sure, somewhere out on the vast web…).

Sigh…not really…internal tech support for a huge hospitality corporation…the cool part would be the incredible discounts we get for stays at any of our properties…

Some days, editor of a series of marketing newsletters for a company that makes automated medical lab equipment.

Other days, Web site designer/content developer.

Very occasionally, photographer.

Cool? Others can decide. Definitely cooler than the job I had during the '80’s: mud logger.

You wouldn’t want to diversify your product line would you? I hear Upham has a great talent with spoons.

Had a nice thing going at a university back in the mid-80s. Through what was essentially a series of misunderstandings, I ended up on a corporate/academic project with a room full of computers to play with and no responsibilities other than to attend the odd meeting and see if the darn things could be made to talk to each other. It led to some interesting consulting stuff.

In the early 90s I had an even better thing going at another university where I was cross-posted between the English and Phys-Ed/Outdoor Adventure departments. I’d read and talk about nice books, go for hikes, skis and saunas at lunch, and occasionally knock off for a few days to launch folks off waterfalls or go backcountry skiing in some lovely wilderness settings.

More recently, I’ve been trying my hand at law. It’s truly a blast. I get to work with tremendously talented people every day. Very friendly, compassionate, dedicated folks.

I don’t know if I’d call any of these jobs cool or not, but I would say that they have all been pretty darn good for me by letting me explore and communicate.

I think everybody knows by now that I’m a ** pornographer ** . The cool parts are:
I work with ** vintage ** porn, which is MUCH more entertaining.
I answer to no one, not even my customers, who buy and enjoy the product without needing to interact with me. (barring the occasionaly phone call for tech support or member cancellation).

stoid

Well, I’m a bookseller, which a lot of people seem to think is cool because I get to hang around books all day, can borrow books from the shop, and can buy books at cost. This is pretty much why I took the job, but after a few months, I just see it as another stupid retail job. I expect to be leaving shortly to run away and have adventures. I’ll miss my discount, though.

I’m a Medical Technologist in a hospital lab and I get to spend eight hours a day with other people’s excretions. (And eyeballs. :))

This week I have been photographing 18-25 year old beautiful naked young women roll around with each other.

And before you all jump to conclusions, this is exactly what you think it is.

I’m an actress. Before that I was an HIV/AIDS counselor. Both pretty cool, I think.

Acting is easier on my emotional status, though. Believe it.

Talk to Anamorphic and Android. Between the two of them they have the full spectrum of cool jobs, I think.

Are they sharp spoons? That could be interesting…

The two of you should meet the Blue Rajah sometime.

Me? I work the Shadow Strategic Rail Authority in London. And before those of you who know what that is say anything, it’s not my fault!

My hobby is much cooler – I sing with the BBC Symphony Chorus. It doesn’t pay much of anything, but hell, we get to sing high quality music in places like the Royal Albert Hall, not to mention the occasional all-expenses-paid tour to places like Istanbul and Palermo. It’s what keeps me going.

Oh, and Upham? My wife’s played flute for the Queen. Of England. Her Maj herself. Lizzie baby. And got to chat with her for about two minutes. Which I think is very cool. (My wife’s comment: “She’s got great skin!”). :stuck_out_tongue:

P.S. Now celebrating 100 posts!

I’m a production assisant which, in and of istself, isn’t that cool. But I work on This Hour Has 22 Minutes, which is widely regarded as a pretty cool show… that is if you’re Canadian… and into politics… and home a lot on monday nights…

You don’t even care do you?

Care? You folks are a national treasure. By far the coolest news show out there.

It looks like there will be an opening at Walkerton once the lynching is finished, so if you ever feel like you are not appreciated where you are, come on up to Ontario, where folks will be very, very happy to see you in your superhero outfit.

I used to do seismic hazard assessment at Sellafield, the British nuclear reprocessing plant. That was 15 years ago though. Does that count?

I’m an American living in Prague, CZ, working for a South African investment services company. Who says globalization doesn’t exist?

I wear about 4 hats from research to systems to think-tank to ??? I get to travel about 2 to 3 times a year to places like South Africa (in Nov/Dec so I get a summer working holiday when the weather sucks here), Hanover (the CeBit Tech fair rocks!), London, Geneva, etc.

We were starting a website for hedge funds but our funding got slashed so we are transferring that to a department in South Africa. Now I am helping start up a new company that invests money in Swiss Bank accounts (you can start humming the theme to James Bond if you like) and will be totally hush-hush and secret with Offshore Trusts and coded logins and passwords and all that- should be neat! I should also start travelling a bit more.

I work in a small office in an apartment with a few other people. We get paid about 4 times the local average salary (but still less US$'s than I made delivering pizza in high school) which goes a LONG way when buying beer here. Our boss insists that it is more efficient to let people eat in the office than leave for lunch so all food is provided, and we have cases of booze in the closet for after work. We wear old t-shirts and jeans, don’t shave for 4 days straight, can leave whenever we want, get whatever days off we need, etc. The only downside is that when we have a project due- it’s due! So we are here til 2am if needed.

I love my job! I hope it lasts for a long, long time.
