Do any rodents eat meat?

Squirrels love to eat birds eggs, as well as the occasional bird they’re able to catch (one would probably have to be injured) and mice.

Yep. We had a pair of pet gerbils as kids, which lived happily together for a couple of years, and then one turned on the other. The wounds on the dead one were certainly more than was necessary to kill it.

I’ve heard about squirrels cracking and eating hatchling turtles like nuts.

And someone here recently mentioned seeing a squirrel eating another squirrel.

It’s recently been discovered that house mice prey on albatrosses.

I am not making this up.

I just hope this rabbit never gets any funny ideas about how flesh might be tasty.

And what do they drink with those turtles? Fermented frog urine?

And what flavour are they?

But seriously…

According to Wikipedia, muskrats are omnivores, including mussels, crawfish, frogs and small turtles in their diets.

[Monty Python]Allllllbatross![/Monty Python]

According to this documentary it has happened before.

It was definitely one of the freakiest things I’ve ever seen. I half expected zombie squirrels to take over the yard.

For that we would need the Holy Hand Grenade.

Python quoting aside, they must taste pretty good if mice are willing to abandon æons of genetically programmed herbivory. Lest anyone think I was joking about this, here’s a report and video (warning: not for the easily sickened) on the news. Googling for “mice albatross” yields several more articles.

“And, oddly, the attacks only take place on some of the island’s peaks, despite the fact that the mice live everywhere on the island.”

Listen, carnivorous mice preying from mountain tops is no basis for a system of evolution… or maybe it is.

If so, he can start with the hand that feeds him – it’s larger than the human’s head!

(Looks like photo distortion to exaggerate the size of the rabbit).

Sailboat

Let’s go to the video. That is one big-assed rabbit, any way you look at it.

Apparently, its a big breed, of which I was (until recently) unaware. More still images.
