…still allow for the genes that person has for eye color to be bbbb? Or does the presence of some brown indicate that there’s a B in there, despite their eyes appearing to be blue?
I’m one of those people (actually, my eyes change from blue to green or gray too, but the “default” is a lightish shade of blue), and there are a lot of brown-eyed people on my mom’s side of the family. Both my parents themselves have blue eyes that are always the same steady shade of blue, as does my brother.
I don’t know, but eye color is more complicated than just one gene would suggest. My wife has what are usually called hazel eyes and I supposedly have blue eyes. In fact, both of us have blue eyes with some brown flecks, although she has more of them than me. We have three children. One of them is brown-eyed and the other two are blue. If you look closely at the one with brown eyes, you realize that just have a lot of brown flecks in a background of blue. But the overall impression is brown.
Hair color is similar. My hair used to be very dark brown; gave the impression of black. My wife had light brown (or maybe dirty blond) hair. The child with the brown eyes has dark brown hair. One of them has light brown hair and the other pale blond. The third started out with light brown hair that turned blond every summer and then darkened every fall. Until one fall, he was about twelve, that it didn’t. Simple Mendelian inheritance cannot explain this. Incidentally, I had one grandfather with pale bond hair. FWIW, I will mention that both my wife and I are pure Ashkenazy Jews.
Yeah. I’ve got weird eyes too. Called Hazel most of the time. They’re green with brown bursts and a thin ring of blue around the outside, with a bit of brown in there too. Depends heavily on emotion at the time. When extremely excited/ happy etc they are more green. When very tired or down they come off as light brown.
Weird, like I said. My Mom has Hazel-Green eyes, lighter and more vibrant than mine. Dad had pure blue eyes his whole life, with dark brown hair.
My only sibling, a slightly older brother, has always had light blue eyes.
Mom and Dad both came from Ashkenazic blood as well, oddly.
