Actually, a wheel that came up 3000 reds in a row would get yanked by the casino, who would then minutely examine it for an imbalance or cheating mechanism of some kind.
In fact, they’d probably stop it at 100 or even 50 in a row. By then, the pit bosses would be eyeballing the players very carefully for suspicious behaviour.
As for betting on natural streaks, I call bullshit. The wheel has no memory. dnooman sounds like he’s witnessing, and that belongs in GD.
Here’s another one of my driveling anecdotes. Now I will probably be called a bullshitting liar by the great Gods that visit this thread. But here goes anyway …
I’m playing blackjack. The hand is over, the dealer pays me. I wasn’t really paying much attention, just kind of daydreaming. The dealer deals the next hand. The dealer asks the first player if he wants a hit. The pit boss jumps into the middle of the game and points at me. He says, you paid this guy on the last hand but he lost. The dealer looks at me and says I owe her 10 bucks. I paid her the 10 bucks, got up and left the table. I was using my nifty blackjack system at the time and I was up a couple hundred bucks. So did I really lose that hand and shouldn’t have been paid? Or, was the pit boss just badgering me? Either way, if they fuck up and deal the next hand it should be water under the bridge. I thought it was a pretty lowdown stinking trick for them to pull on me. They waved me back to cash in my chips on that table so they wouldn’t have to get a refill, I gave them a look that basically said fuck you
I was never ‘badgered’ in the sense of being hassled by anyone. Mostly, it would just be things like noticing that the pit boss was on the phone looking in my direction. Since it could have been a request for the guys in the security room to start watching my play, I would sit there and flat-bet for a few hands, then leave.
I have had pit bosses come over and chat with me while I play. I used to be able to count while chatting, so my play wouldn’t change while I talked to him.
The best trick I ever pulled was one night I was playing in Reno, and losing. A pit boss was watching after a particularly bad few hands. He took pity on me and said, “Here, you’ll win the next hand!” and snapped his fingers. And I did. So I decided the pit boss was ‘lucky’, and every time the count went really high I’d call him over and ask him to bless the cards. He’d dutifully oblige, and I’d put out a huge bet. I spent the entire night in that casino spreading like 15-1, and they loved it.
Another trick I used to use to avoid negative shoes was if the count would go bad, I’d decide to tip the house by placing a bet for them at the roulette table. They loved this - especially when I hit a number and came back with a $50 tip. I’d ask them all to give me their lucky numbers, and I’d go play them for a buck. This did two things - it got me away from the table during bad shoes, it kept the house happy and in tips, and it made me look like a crazy gambler.
That’s the kind of stuff you do to stay in the games - be creative, be nice, be an asset to the house. If you walk around surly and make snide comments to people and refuse to tip, the house will look for an excuse to turf you.

I see no inconsistencies here. My second quote states “generally” not “always”.

I am a very congenial gambler. I talk with people around me, I laugh, I tip VERY well. They have no reason to dislike me other than the fact I may be raking some of THEIR chips into my pocket as I leave the table. Maybe my definition of a badger is a bit too broad. I define a badger as anyone who is focused on me with the sole intention of making me uncomfortable. Maybe badger is too harsh of a word for the intense scrutiny you are under by casino management when you have a sustained “lucky” streak? The badgers that are really schmoozers trying to keep you playing until you lose everything, well I guess I just lump them in with the rest of the badgers because they make me uncomfortable too.
I too have met some VERY cool people working at casinos, including (gasp) pit bosses. The cool pit bosses I have met are truly few and far between though. I do need to stay out of casinos like Mirage and Bellagio, they cater strictly to the people with tons of money that enjoy losing it quickly. If you aren’t one of these fools, steer clear of those two casinos. There are plenty of other casinos in Vegas of the same ilk, it’s just those two come to mind. I typically have more fun, and I am more relaxed, in the “real people” casinos like Flamingo, Ballys, Paris, etc. Also, the badger radar seems to be less intense in these places.
One final note, DAMN YOU PEOPLE on this thread You got my blood pumping so much about casinos I had to drive over to the Tampa “Indian” casino today to check that place out. ALL the slots are electronic there, I sill like the old flush handle slots myself. There was a line waiting to get on the blackjack tables. It looked like they were playing decent blackjack though, 3 deck I think. And of course they were building a new wing onto the place TWICE as big as the original. Gee, I wonder how they can afford to do that?
it’s been ages since i’d seen that movie and i’ve forgotten everything except the funny way dustin hoffman walked and talked, and tom cruise being…, well tom cruise. hmm, maybe i’ll go rent it or something.
interesting posts so far, can i settle the OP by saying 'no it doesn’t happen in real life, but if you do consistently win big you’ll be scrutinised for cheating, shown to the higher value tables, and banned in no time for whatever reasons come in handy. shouldn’t that be enough to convince people that casinos are bad places?
dnooman, let a layman explain; there’s nothing special about the number 10 or 14. black could come in 11, 12, 13, 15, 16 etc. since odds are 1:1 there’s no way you can bet safely on it.
following Ellis Dee’s link about gambling systems i have another question to ask - take for example the martingale system where you double everything you lose. that’s obviously a very bad way to play, but wouldn’t that make the reverse (letting it ride) a very good way to play? somehow i don’t think so. when it comes to money and gambling humans don’t make the most logical creatures…
